edgar martinez is in my hall of famer collection

i was on the fence at first about adding edgar martinez to my hall of famer collection, but here he is with this card as his entry:
that's a 2017 topps tribute walk off autograph, numbered 17/50. here's the back:
once i saw this card, i knew it was the one that would punch martinez's ticket in to my collection. back in 1995, i was still a fan of the game, but there were three things that helped me get over the strike and cancellation of the 1994 postseason. one was nomomania, two was cal ripken, and the third was the seattle mariners and "the double".

to be honest, i would have preferred to see the angels win the american league west and i was certainly disappointed when the mariners beat the halos in a single game playoff to determine the division winner. i was also sort of pleased to see don mattingly get a shot at the postseason for the first time with the yankees in their first return to fall ball since 1981. however, once the games began, i was all in for the mariners. they were a loaded team with ken griffey jr, randy johnson, jay buhner, and martinez, but lost the first two games of the division series to the yankees. they won the next two to set up the winner-take-all game 5, which went to the 11th inning tied at four. game 3 starters for both the yankees (jack mcdowell) and mariners (randy johnson) were both pitching in relief. johnson gave up a go-ahead run in the top of the 11th, but in the bottom of the frame, joey cora and griffey singled, and edgar followed with a walk-off double to send the mariners to their first (and only) alcs. and so the inevitability of this card's creation was put in motion. it was such an exciting baseball moment to witness, and the replay still makes me smile.

martinez was a professional hitter in the truest sense, and i was able to see him hit in person four times: against the angels on may 25, 1997, against the twins on september 13, 1998, against the blue jays on april 15, 2000, and against the twins on may 29, 2003. in those games, martinez was a combined 10 for 20 with 2 homers and 8 rbi. so what if he was a dh for the vast majority of his career? it's a legitimate position in the game, and he was the best we've seen at that position.

here's my hall of famer collection as its been documented so far:

  2. I'm with you on the DH/HOF debate. It's a position and if you're one of the greatest you deserve a spot in Cooperstown.

  3. I wish I would've gotten one of his autos before the talk of his HOF candidacy started to get serious. There just too much now that he's actually gotten in!

  4. The have a pretty cool piece of artwork capturing "The Double" at Seattle's ballpark. Without consulting a fan of the Mariners, I have to assume this is the biggest moment in their playoff history to date. Great card!
