my retired number collection - 41

this is the 40th post in a series that shares the cards i have in my retired number mini-collection. you can find the links to the previous posts down at the bottom of this post. if you're eager to learn more right now, you can check out the full list of retired numbers along with what this collection will entail over at my want list site.

so, without further ado, here are the two people for whom number 41 has been retired:

eddie mathews (retired by the braves in 1969) 2000 fleer greats of the game
the braves retired number 41 for eddie mathews on july 26, 1969, less than a year after he retired from the game as a player. he had last played for the braves in 1966, and in 1967 the club issued the number to pitcher jim britton. it looks like britton wore it just once as baseball reference notes he also wore 42 in the 1967 season, and he only appeared in two games for atlanta that season. that mistake was somewhat remedied when mathews returned to the field as the braves' manager in 1972 and wore his number 41, making him the last brave to wear the number on the field.

mathews played for the braves from 1952 through 1966, across three cities - boston, milwaukee, and atlanta. his 2000 fleer greats card has him representing milwaukee, which is where he played for the bulk of his career. in fact, he helped the franchise win the world series in 1957 and had two second place mvp finishes to his credit while in wisconsin. his 493 home runs hit as a brave rank second only to hank aaron's 733. in most other offensive categories, mathews ranks third in franchise history behind aaron and chipper jones. like those two, mathews is a hall of famer, voted in on his fifth ballot in 1978.

tom seaver (retired by the mets in 1988) 1976 topps
tom seaver was an all-time great with the mets, and their first superstar. arguably the greatest right handed pitcher since walter johnson, he hit the league as a 22 year old in 1967 and promptly won the rookie of the year award while compiling 16 wins. two years later, he won the first of three cy young awards that he would claim as a met and led the team to an improbable, no, check that, an amazin' world series championship.

he won 198 games and struck out 2,541 batters as a met in two separate stints. his first tenure ended with a trade to the reds in 1977, and he later returned for the 1983 season. choosing a card for this collection came down to his 1976 or 1984 topps issues, because they were the only ones that clearly showed his number. i went for his base card from 1976 (his record breaker card would have worked, too) since it is from his first run with the team when he was most dominant. and, that dominance continues to be evident to this day, as he is still the mets' all-time leader in starts, wins, and strikeouts, and is second in era to jacob degrom by 0.05 runs per 9 innings.

seaver was the last met to wear number 41, doing so in his return in 1983 although nobody had worn it since he was dealt to the reds. the franchise retired it on june 24, 1988 and seaver was elected to the hall of fame four years later on his first ballot with the highest percentage of votes (98.8%) at that time in history.

i am tracking a few things as we go, even though the information is already available elsewhere.

my retired number collection - 21

this is the 20th post in a series that shares the cards i have in my retired number mini-collection. you can find the links to the previous posts down at the bottom of this post. if you're eager to learn more right now, you can check out the full list of retired numbers along with what this collection will entail over at my want list site.

without further ado, here are the four people for whom number 21 has been retired:

warren spahn (retired by the braves in 1965) 2004 playoff honors
warren spahn pitched in 714 games over 20 seasons with the braves, winning 356 games and amassing just under 2,500 strikeouts in boston and milwaukee. he was the 1957 cy young award winner in the national league, and led the braves to their lone world series title in wisconsin that same year. he is the braves' all-time leader in wins, games started, innings pitched, and among the leaders in a host of other categories. 2004 playoff honors continues to contribute some nice looking cards to this collection!

the braves retired his number on december 11, 1965 shortly after he retired from his playing career, having spent a couple of years with the mets and giants. he was voted to the hall of fame in 1973 and was a member of the all-century team in 1999. although no brave wore spahn's number after he left the braves following the 1963 season, baseball reference shows some players wearing 21 in the last couple of seasons. i believe that is related to roberto clemente day and the team's nominee for the roberto clemente award, rather than an unretirement of the number.

roberto clemente (retired by the pirates in 1973) 2019 topps stadium club
speaking of clemente, his number 21 was retired by the pirates on april 6, 1973 - opening day following his untimely death the previous december. topps reused the photo from clemente's iconic 1971 topps card on his 2019 topps stadium club card, and i've chosen that card for this collection because i don't have a dupe of his '71.

clemente spent his entire career with the pirates (after being selected from the dodgers in a rule v draft), winning the national league mvp award in 1966 and leading the club to two world series titles. he was the mvp of the 1971 world series and won 12 straight gold glovers as an elite defensive right fielder.

clemente was posthumously elected to the hall of fame in 1973 by a special election, waiving the typical five year waiting period. there have been some who have raised the possibility of major league baseball retiring number 21 leaguewide, but so far it has not happened. some players do wear his number on roberto clemente day, however, as mentioned earlier.

bob lemon (retired by the guardians in 1998) 2000 fleer greats of the game
the indians retired lemon's number on june 20, 1998 to honor lemon, their ace who spent his entire major league playing career with the franchise. seven times in 13 years he won 20 or more games, leading the league in that category as well as strikeouts in 1950. lemon won both of his starts in the 1948 world series against the braves, helping the indians win their most recent world series title, and his number retirement ceremony was set so as to coincide with the 50th anniversary celebration of that team and its accomplishment..

lemon was voted into the hall of fame in 1976, his 14th year on the ballot. his election came as he was managing the his 2000 fleer greats of the game card offers a glimpse of the number on his back. the last cleveland player to wear the number before it was retired was greg swindell in 1991, although it looks like jose ramirez has worn it in relation to the roberto clemente day activities.

paul o'neill (retired by the yankees in 2022) 2004 upper deck yankees classics
paul o'neill had his number retired by the yankees on august 21, 2022. he was the right fielder on the team that enjoyed a return to prominence in the mid-to late 1990's and into the early 2000's. after joining the yankees, o'neill (who had won a ring in cincinnati in 1990) helped the yankees to three world series titles before he retired following the 2001 season.

a couple of yankee players wore number 21 after o'neills retirement, the last of which was latroy hawkins in 2008. while o'neill was "one and done" on the hall of fame ballot with only 2.2% of the writers' vote, he was a key contributor and remains connected to the yankee franchise through his broadcasting gig. i was happy to find the 2004 ud yankees classics card since the yankee uniforms do not include numbers on the front like many other teams.

i am tracking a few things as we go, even though the information is already available elsewhere.

jim kaat is in my hall of famer collection

one of the criteria i had for my hall of famer collection was related to the 1978 topps set. if they are in the hall as a player, and were included in that set, then they automatically gain entry in to my hall of famer collection. so, let's welcome jim kaat to the collection, with this card as his entry:
that's a 2000 fleer greats of the game autograph. here's the back:
kaat was voted in on the golden age ballot earlier this month, but i've had this card for a few years now. i plucked it out of the "traveling box" that bad wax established - the box that went missing under what i considered to be suspicious circumstances.

i've held on to this card for just this purpose, even though i didn't really expect kaat to be voted in - i was actually thinking that dick allen might be the only one elected, and he missed by one vote! to me, kaat was a longevity guy who was firmly established in the hall of very good. by his own admission, he was never the ace of a pitching staff, but was rather a solid 2 or 3 in the rotation.

i do recall turning his 1978 topps card over as a new collector and seeing the very small font on the back thanks to his already extended career and thinking that he must be a pretty good pitcher. his 1983 topps card had even smaller font, and even though he fell short of the magic numbers - 300 wins and 3000 strikeouts - his career was still impressive to me.  kaat remained on my radar in the 1990's as an announcer, and he's been around the twins every now and again to call some games on their cable broadcasts. he was elected to the twins' hall of fame in 2001 (their second class), and it will be interesting to see if his number 36 gets retired now that he's in cooperstown.

i would expect that tommy john is very happy to see kaat elected as there are a lot of similarities between the two pitchers and their careers. i also wonder if the writers will give a boost to andy pettitte due to kaat's election.

anyway, congratulations to kitty kaat - i am glad he's on the right side of the grass to enjoy the call! i've updated my hall of famer collection on my want site - i decided not to show it in these posts anymore.

tony oliva is in my hall of famer collection

i know quite a few twins fans that were very happy to hear that tony oliva was voted in to the hall of fame by the golden days committee earlier this month.  i had prepared for the possibility by picking up a certified autograph card of him for my hall of famer collection:
that's a 2000 fleer greats of the game autograph card. here's the back:
one twins executive noted that he doubted there was a baseball fan in the state of minnesota that didn't have at least two tony oliva autographs thanks to his propensity for signing and interacting with fans as a team ambassador. that assessment was true for me - i have three or four items signed by him - but i didn't have a certified auto.

one of the non-certified autographs in our home is in one of my son's team yearbooks. we were at twins' spring training in 2008, and i pointed oliva out. my son approached him to sign the yearbook and i think oliva thought i sent him on my behalf. even so, he signed the book and tapped my son on the head. since then i've seen oliva at a number of team events and most recently had him sign a 1978 topps twins team card for my half-hearted attempt at a signed set of that release.

oliva's career concluded before i began following baseball, but i had his 1974 topps card early on in my collecting days and was impressed with the text on the back that noted "led al in batting three times; led al in basehits five times; led al in doubles four times". oliva never did lead the league in any categories again, although he took advantage of the newly created designated hitter position to extend a career that was going to be cut short due to knee problems.

longtime teammate (and now fellow hall of famer) bert blyleven had long been an advocate of oliva's regarding his being deserving of recognition for the hall of fame, even to the point of annoying voters who were deciding blyleven's fate if i recall correctly. i could appreciate that risk on blyleven's part, and it made me take a closer look at oliva's numbers. i am glad that the committee did as well!

by the way, i've updated my hall of famer collection on my want site - i decided not to show it in its entirety as part of these posts anymore.

there was a wills, so i thought there might be a way

maury wills was one of the players eligible for the hall of fame on the golden era committee ballot, which was voted on yesterday. unfortunately, wills did not get the call from the hall.

i am a bigger hall kind of guy, so i was hoping wills would make it. that would also initiate the retirement of his jersey number by the dodgers, which i also support. wills was a big part of the franchise as it moved from brooklyn to los angeles, and his speed was an asset on those somewhat underperforming offensive teams of the early 1960's.

i am biased, of course, and wills is probably just a hall of very good player who stole a lot of bases and broke one of ty cobb's records in his most well known season. anyway, i figured i would show some autographs of wills that i've acquired recently - particularly after fuji noted how affordable his certified autos can be in response to one of my earlier posts.

2004 topps retired signature
and a full run of fleer greats of the game autos from 1999 to 2001
i've thought about adding wills to my hall of famer collection, but haven't pulled that trigger (yet). i guess i am not too unlike the dodgers in their retired number stance when it comes to guys like wills and gil hodges - another guy who was on sunday's ballot but, unlike wills, one who was elected to cooperstown. i assume the dodgers will now retire hodges' number 14, and i will certainly be adding him to my hall of famer collection (along with a couple others). stay tuned on that.

in other hall of fame news, it will be interesting to see who is elected by the writers for induction in 2022 with some big names entering their last year on the ballot and some big names being added to the ballot for the first time. i'm looking forward to the results!

ralph kiner is in my hall of famer collection

ralph kiner barely made it in to the national baseball hall of fame in his last year of eligibility for the writers' vote, receiving just one more vote than the minimum for enshrinement. similarly, he's a late addition to my hall of famer collection. here's the card that represents his membership in my mini-collection:
that's a 2000 fleer greats of the game autograph. here's the back:
kiner's election came in 1975, twenty years after he had retired as a player at the age of 32, thanks to a bad back. he had been released by the indians just a couple of days shy of his 33rd birthday, and he decided to become the general manager of the minor league san diego padres instead of taking a chance with surgery. with the padres, kiner also began his career as a broadcaster. he is better known for calling mets' games from their inception in 1962 until the 2013 season.

that's how i first became aware of kiner - through his broadcasting. as a young fan, i had read about yogi berra's penchant for verbal gymnastics, and so i also became aware of kiner doing the same. i don't remember the book i read that featured a number of his sayings, but it was a book that had compiled a number of baseball stories and topics and was a great read one summer while on a family vacation, traveling throughout the western states on our way to canada.

it wasn't until much later that i really took a look at kiner, the player. in 1987, a rookie named mark mcgwire was hitting home runs at a record pace, and i learned that the last rookie to lead their league in home runs was kiner. way back in 1946, kiner hit 23 homers in his first season as a big leaguer, and then went on to lead the national league in home runs in each of the next six seasons. seven straight home run crowns to start a career is a record, and one that would seem to be untouchable in today's game.

when kiner retired, he was sixth on the all-time home run list. he was the fastest player to ever reach 300 home runs in terms of games played (babe ruth, the first to 300, did it in fewer at bats). kiner also finished his career with an at bat to home run ratio second only to ruth, although mcgwire, barry bonds, and jim thome have since passed kiner in that category. a few years ago, i read kiner's autobiography "baseball forever" which wasn't the greatest baseball book i've read, but it gave some insight in to his career and thoughts about the game that i was happy to acquire. i am also happy to correct my original oversight and add him to my hall of famer collection.

here's my hall of famer collection as its been documented so far:
