the almost daily dodger - paul loduca

it's been about 20 years since paul loduca played for the dodgers and i still think he is one of my least favorite dodgers. here's his 2002 upper deck sweet spot card

that is new-ish to my collection.

it's likely that my opinion was formed through no fault of loduca's, as i wasn't a fan of the mike piazza trade, and loduca was one of the catchers that the dodgers deployed in the months following that deal. he wound up putting together a couple of good seasons for the dodgers, but he still wasn't mike piazza, and that's not his fault. he wound up replacing piazza again, this time in new york when he joined the mets in 2006. that same year loduca helped the amazins beat the dodgers in the nlds which did nothing to change my opinion of him.

i really don't seek out his cards, but i like this set and was a couple away from completing the basic team set, so here we are. if you have kevin brown's 2002 ud sweet spot card available, please let me know!

i've got a mind to show some cards from my parallel collection

what if there were a parallel universe where there were only base cards? back in 2005, there were so many parallels being produced thanks to releases like diamond kings and studio portraits. actually, studio portraits was all parallels with no 'base' cards, really.  here's a kirk gibson card from that set that came my way via trade last fall with greg of the collective mind:

that is a diamond kings red parallel card, one of 56 different cards from this set for the 1988 national league mvp. daunting.

now for something somewhat different - here's a 1998 donruss preferred mike piazza

nope, not a parallel. just the second of his cards in the base set - noted as 'grandstand' for obvious reasons. there are parallels of this card, but this isn't one of them.

same goes for this 2003 playoff absolute memorabilia shawn green card

just a simple base card that also mentions 5/23/02 on the back.

these cards had some high serial numbered print runs - this one is numbered to 4500.

now for some 2004 donruss elite paul loduca parallels

the 'turn of the century' parallel is for some reason numbered to 750 (and issued in 2004), while the 'aspirations' parallel is die cut and numbered to 84. the numbering of the 'aspirations' parallels varied from player to player, but doesn't seem to be tied to anything as far as i can tell. i wonder if donruss was just spinning wheels and picking numbers out of hats when it came to deciding what treatments and numbering to give to parallels back then.

here's one more - a 2005 donruss team heroes derek lowe blue showdown parallel

these blue parallels weren't numbered, but the bronze, gold and silver versions were, with the silver being numbered to a smaller print run (/10) than the gold (/50). make sense? 

in addition to dodgers, greg and i came to an agreement on some other cards to be sent my way including a nice batch of vladimir guerrero cards

i had at one time given some thought to building this set until i realized that many of the photos were used on multiple cards. still, it was nice to see a variety in what greg sent - that dr. j card is fantastic.  here's a closer look at my favorite, however

i put this card of qe ii in my lurker mini-collection thanks to old friend johnny oates being present. the oriole shaking the hand of hrh is ellie hendricks, i believe, although it could also be tom mccraw, al jackson, curt motton, or even frank robinson, i suppose. this meeting occured about a week before robinson was fired and oates was named the manager of the o's, and all of those men mentioned were on robinson's staff.

baseball cards come to me

bo from baseball cards come to life and i swapped cards over the summer as a result of our mutual giveaways, and i wound up with quite a haul of "lurker" cards in addition to the cards that i claimed. perhaps my favorite of the bunch is this 2010 topps dexter fowler card

with none other than johnnie b. baker there in the background! if i squint, i like to think i can see his toothpick.

another dodger of my youth was spotted on this 2008 topps milton bradley card

that's davey lopes with number 15 on his sleeve. he was the phillies' first base coach back then.  there are a ton more lurker cards that i will show in this post, but first here are some dodgers that he sent my way earlier in the year:

this next card i claimed in one of bo's giveaways - 1980 topps vince ferragamo

i collected football cards in 1978 and a bit in 1979, but by 1980, i had stopped buying packs and focused just on baseball. i still followed the rams that year, and my favorite ram had evolved from lawrence mccutcheon to vince ferragamo, although the poster on my wall was of cullen bryant. anyway, i no longer owned a card of ferragamo, so i asked for this one. i used to have his 1979 card, but it had the ram horns airbrushed off of the helmet so this is a better choice. i put this card in my 'meaningful and just because' mini-collection.

bo also sent me this altered 1970 topps card of the late, great dick allen

i had commented on the modification of allen's team affiliation to the dodgers, as well as him being awarded a gold star. fun.

as we expanded the exchange of cards in to a bigger trade, one of the cards i requested was this 2002 topps 206 rich thompson card

it was a need for my set build, and i was happy to see it offered. you don't see too many cards from this set in trade packages, and this was the second one i was able to add that way last year (the other being a stan musial card from kerry).

that's morgan running to his left. it looks like the umpire is raising his hand to call agee out, but it also looks like morgan is running to field a loose ball.

1972 topps rick wise (jim bunning)

bunning is number 14, and he was otherwise shut out of the 1972 topps set as far as a card of his own, which would have been a final tribute.

1973 topps bob locker (reggie jackson)

both locker and his a's teammate in the outfield are airbrushed into semi-cubs uniforms.

no airbrushing here.

1982 topps manny trillo (mike schmidt)

looks like tony armas is there, too. i figure this photo comes from the 1981 all-star game in cleveland.

back-to-back cards featuring eric the red. i really liked this card back in 1986 as it reminded me of the 1973 topps steve garvey card that prominently featured wes parker. sort of a 'changing of the guard' card.

only one of the players on this card was a nl mvp, and it's not the one that you might have thought if you weren't following baseball during their active careers.

i think this photo is from 1989 as that was the only time i could find mariano duncan playing shortstop at pittsburgh. that would make it luis quinones there in the background.
