i have been vocal on this blog in recent years lamenting the lack of new topps garvey cards, and i was rewarded this year with a slew of them. too many, if i am being honest.

still, it's great to see him on the checklists and being able to pick and choose which ones i want to pursue and add to my collection. and, even with the boon of new garvey autograph cards to chase, there are still a lot from previous years that i am (and was) in "need" of. as a result, i haven't been limiting myself to current garvey autos over the last couple of years.
in fact, my most recent garvey autograph card addition is this one from 2009 topps sterling:

comes from 2002 donruss originals as part of their "recollection collection" buyback autographs. it is obviously a 1986 donruss card signed, stamped, and embossed. here's the back:
limited to 23 copies. 1986 donruss is one of garvey's worst cards in my opinion. i don't mind the max headroom design too much, rather the photo stinks.
in 2003, garvey was included in donruss' signature series as part of the "legends of summer" insert set. it included autographed cards - bronze, silver and gold. this silver card includes the "74 mvp" notation
that was obviously added later. there are other notation variations - his number (6), "81 ws", and "78 as mvp". i have examples of all of them except the 1978 all-star mvp. here's the back:
garvey could have added even more notations, but i am guessing that donruss limited him to those four.
in 2012, garvey had a number of cards in topps' triple threads release, and i was able to acquire a few of them. i had missed out on this one
it's a unity relics autograph sepia parallel. i have the "base" version, too, but i know you will believe me when i tell you that there are four other parallels of this same card that i don't have.
in 2015, panini issued a multi-sport set called national treasures collegiate multisport. this treasured cuts autograph of the garv
was a welcome addition. i have no connection to michigan state, but i do know a couple of people who have gone there. i was just happy to see one come up for sale at a reasonable price a few years after the set first hit the market.
same with this 2016 topps archives signature series 1982 o-pee-chee buyback auto
although i have grown tired of this concept as it was continued again in 2021. two years of garvey cards in 2015 and 2016 were probably enough. i didn't need more of the same buybacks signed in 2021.
there were only four cards issued by topps in 2020 that featured garvey, and three of those were deca-booklet cards from triple threads. panini, however, had garvey in quite a few of their releases. in national treasures, they had him as part of the retro signatures subset
as well as the treasured material subset.
someday they will run out of swatches from the jacket they've been using for the past few years.
