larry doby, the first player to break the color barrier in the american league, is in my hall of famer collection with this card as his entry:

i just love that set.

i first learned about doby as being jackie robinson's counterpart in the american league, but later came to understand that thinking of him that way was a disservice to doby's own individual merits. yes, he was the second black player and first american leaguer to enter the majors in 1947, making his debut on july 5 for the indians which was just under two weeks before the st. louis browns added hank thompson to their roster, but he was also a hall of fame player in his own right.

doby's career began in 1942 with the newark eagles of the negro leagues when he was just 18, and in 1946 he helped them defeat the kansas city monarchs to claim the league championship. bill veeck signed him and arranged for him to join the indians during the 1947 season. while doby struggled that year, he went on to help the indians win the world series the following year, becoming the first african-american to hit a home run in the fall classic along the way.

doby was an all-star for seven consecutive seasons with the indians, from 1949 to 1955. he twice led the league in home runs, including in 1954 when he also led the league in rbi and finished second in the mvp voting as the indians once again took the pennant while winning a then-record 111 regular season games. he also played for the white sox and tigers during his 13-year major league career, and amassed over 1,500 hits and 250 home runs. he was voted in to the hall of fame by the veterans' committee in 1998.
