clayton kershaw is in my hall of famer collection

clayton kershaw is hopefully not even close to the end of his career, although his contract with the dodgers is up after this season. even if his career were to end, however, he is already in my hall of famer collection with this card as his entry:

that's a 2015 topps museum collection archival autograph numbered 43/99. here's the back:

five pitchers were selected before clayton kershaw's name was called in the 2006 draft. the dodgers had the seventh pick, and the royals, rockies, pirates, mariners, and tigers each took a pitcher from the college ranks. the devil rays took the only position player (evan longoria) in the mix with the third pick. all six of those teams passed on kershaw, as well as tim lincecum and max scherzer, much to their chagrin.

since then, kershaw has put up hall of fame numbers and reached the pinnacle of the profession as far as starting pitchers are concerned. as of late late august, there are only 40 pitchers in baseball history who have a career era lower than kershaw's, and i think mariano rivera is the only one of them to have ever been photographed in color. he is 7th all-time in won/loss percentage, although he was higher before the 2021 season began (i wrote about this possibility back when topps issued a very poorly executed "now" card). anyway, his whip is good for 4th all-time, and his k/9 12th. 

as for counting stats, kershaw is nearing 200 wins and he is getting close to 3,000 strikeouts, although he is just about two full seasons away from reaching that milestone at this point. it would be a shame if he fell short, but that achievement is not critical to his legacy.  after all, he's thrown a no-hitter, won three cy young awards, as well as the pitching triple crown. and, despite having made a few bad pitches at the wrong times in a few postseason games, he is a world series champion. he also has more postseason strikeouts than anyone else in the game. yes, that means he played on good teams, but if the most postseason hits can be a thing for derek jeter, the same can be said for kershaw. 

since kershaw debuted in 2008, i have seen the dodgers play in person nine times in four different series. in 2011, they came to minnesota but kershaw pitched in the game before the start of the series against the twins. in 2012, i went to a game at dodger stadium and kershaw started the game the night after the contest i attended. in 2014, the dodgers returned to minnesota, but kershaw was injured. he was activated a few days after the club left target field. finally, just this past july, i bought tickets to the first two games of the second half in colorado. surely kershaw would start one of those games as the starting rotation would be reset after the all-star game. well, he surely would have started one of those games, had he not been injured.

kershaw returned to the mound for the dodgers yesterday, and i still hope to see him pitch in person someday. i just hope he's wearing a dodger uniform.
