zack wheat is in my hall of famer collection

zach (zack?) wheat is in my hall of famer collection, with this card as his entry:
that's a 2002 topps tribute milestone materials relic card celebrating his 400th career double. here's the back:
when i was just starting out as a baseball fan and card collector, there were a couple of yankee fans in my neighborhood. they would talk about babe ruth this and lou gehrig that, and i desperately wanted to throw some dodger greats in their face. zack wheat was the best i could find from the pre-war days of the game, although babe herman and his .393 average in 1930 were mentioned a few times in these discussions, too. wheat was no babe ruth, to be sure, but he wasn't chopped liver, either.

wheat played for brooklyn back when they were known as the superbas and then the robins. he spent 18 of his 19 seasons with the club, beginning in 1909 and finishing his career in 1927 with the philadelphia a's. he led the league in batting in 1918 and slugging in 1916, leading the franchise to their first world series that year. as a "dodger", his career stats still top the franchise leaderboard to this day. he ranks first in games played, at bats, plate appearances, times on base, hits, total bases, singles, doubles, and triples. he's second in runs scored and extra base hits, and third in rbi.

and it's not just franchise stats - he outperformed most of his contemporaries, too. by my calculations, wheat retired holding 9th place on the all-time hits list, and 7th place on the all-times doubles list, with the names above him being of the ty cobb, tris speaker, honus wagner, nap lajoie variety. today, there are still only 40 players who have more career hits than wheat; soon likely to be 41 depending on whether or not miguel cabrera stays healthy.

wheat was elected to the hall by the veteran's committee in 1957, but it turned out that he wasn't yet eligible. so, they re-elected him in 1959 when he hit the then-required 30 years of retirement. since wheat played before players wore numbers, i think it would be a nice touch if the dodgers were to add a "b" to their left field row of retired numbers and microphones to recognize wheat, similar to how the giants recognize christy mathewson with a "ny" placard among their retired numbers. it would give me something to point to and tell those old friends that zack wheat was indeed a great player.

  1. It's kind of sad that it took the veteran's committee to get him into the HOF.

    1. if you go back and look at the voting results from the first few years, it's mind boggling in regards to who lacked support

  2. .317 lifetime batting average... and the Veteran's Committee had to let him in? Like Jon commented... it's kind of sad.

    1. at least he was still alive when inducted, unlike ron santo which is truly sad.

  3. I don't think I realized or noticed that players were w/o numbers at some point. If Wheat played until 1927, makes me wonder when Babe and Lou got their numbers. By this logic, it would have been after that season, unless that was more of a Dodgers thing?
