in a way completed

back in 2019, i was really interested in the 150 years insert set that topps put out. it included three subsets - greatest players, greatest seasons, and greatest moments - and was spread out across their flagship products. i thought about completing the entire set and even picked up a number of non-dodger singles at a couple of card shows i went to.  then i saw that they included some cards in the autograph-only clearly authentic release.

that cooled me on the idea of chasing the full set, even though i could have done it without including the clearly authentic cards. however, that was the only release to include a card of don sutton and so i decided to scrap the whole idea and just complete the dodger set.

fast forward a few months, and i only needed sutton's card to complete the dodgers from this insert set. i finally pulled the trigger on that last card just after christmas:
sutton is featured as a "greatest player" which i think is appropriate given his lofty status on the career strikeouts list, and is befitting a hall of famer by definition.

some of the other 12 players included on the clearly authentic checklist - carlton fisk, steve carlton, rod carew, juan marichal, ivan rodriguez, jim rice, dwight gooden, dennis eckersley, bert blyleven, and al kaline - also had non-auto cards to chase in other releases. most of them were "greatest players" in both clearly authentic and series 1, 2 or update, with the exception of rice and gooden who were celebrated for "greatest seasons" and "greatest moments", respectively. joining sutton exclusively in clearly authentic were johnny damon and juan gonzalez.

it's nice to have a last on-card autograph of sutton, and it's nice to have completed another team set - especially one that goes beyond just this particular release.

  1. Does Don have straight hair in that photo? I'm so used to seeing his curly hair on cards.

    1. He went curly around 1975 I think. It was definitely weird for me the first time I saw a photo of him with straight hair which was in one of those dodger black and white player photo packs we bought at the stadium
