i waited almost as long as i could to publish this post. ted simmons is in my hall of famer collection with this card as his entry:
that's a 2013 panini golden age historic signatures card. here's the back:
there aren't too many on-card simmons autograph cards out there, and i bought this one after searching for a few months. it was priced with a buy-it-now well below the going rate, so i bought it even though i was really hoping for one of his topps archives autograph cards that has been on fuji's wantlist for what seems like forever. not too long after, i bought a redemption card for an immaculate collection autograph from panini, but it's been over a year with no fulfillment of the card (panini says simmons hasn't returned the cards yet), so here we are.i was surprised when simmons retired that he had such hall-worthy numbers. living on the west coast and having simmons spend the majority of his career playing for central and east division teams, i didn't follow his career that closely. by the time he joined the braves and the national league west in the late 1980's, he was primarily a pinch-hitter and didn't really register on my radar. i certainly coveted his 1980 topps card thanks to the all-star banner, but otherwise didn't pay too much attention to him. even when the brewers made it to the world series with simmons in 1982, i was more interested in don sutton, paul molitor, and robin yount.
still, simmons retired with 2,472 hits, a .285 batting average, and almost 1,400 rbi which is impressive. upon closer inspection - especially considering other catchers - i figured simmons was indeed hall of fame worthy. so, i was as surprised as anyone that he only received 3.7% of the hall of fame vote in his first year of eligibility and was therefore dropped from future ballots. he later appeared on a few veterans' committee ballots, but fell short until 2019 when he was finally elected to the hall of fame for enshrinement in 2020. i don't know if he will be the last of the players featured in the 1978 set to gain enshrinement - i am still pulling for steve garvey, tommy john, dave parker, and dale murphy - but my guess is that if any others make it, it is most likely to be lou whitaker.
and, while we are dealing with what ifs...if panini ever comes through with my redemption, i'll likely swap the above simmons' card out for the flashy and fancier one, which is ironic because he was anything but flashy.

Yup. Forever. I think about that Archives card whenever I see this Golden Age autograph. Hope Simmons returns his Immaculate cards to Panini sooner than later.
ReplyDeletei saw a silver parallel of the archives card when i first started following simmons autograph sales. i should have pulled the trigger back then...
DeleteI agree that Lou Whitaker is the most likely candidate to be the next person from the 1978 set enshrines, but don't sleep on Luis Tiant.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the redemption coming through.
good point about tiant. he should be in for consideration as well.
DeleteI've read of a lot of people having trouble with their redemptions since the Rona got going, specifically with Panini. Apparently even trying to get a replacement has become much more difficult than it used to be.
