rickey henderson is in my hall of famer collection

rickey henderson was, at one time, gcrl's second or third favorite non-dodger. it is no surprise, therefore, that gcrl has included rickey in gcrl's hall of famer collection. here is the card that serves as rickey's entry:
that's a 2016 topps tribute certified foundations of greatness autograph numbered 49 of 50. here's the back:
gcrl definitely wanted a card of rickey on the base paths, and having him in the all-white uniform with the pullover jersey from the early 1980's is just a bonus. gcrl is going to stop with the third person now.

it's true - by the time the 1980 season was about half way done, my favorite non-dodger was pete rose, but rickey henderson was giving rod carew a run for second place (previous favorite don baylor suffered an injury early in the 1980 season, which dropped him to fourth on the list). i was excited by the way the a's were playing even though they weren't really contending. billy martin had them playing billy ball, and rickey was stealing bases with mike norris (i was shocked when he did not win the cy young award that year) leading a formidable pitching staff. speaking of which, an encounter with matt keough at a local bank promotion that my dad was involved in also helped spur my fandom of the a's.

still, it was rickey that stood out to me on that team. he was an all-star in 1980, but didn't get on base in his lone at bat which was somewhat disappointing to me. i was rooting for the national league to win, of course, but i would have liked to have seen rickey run on national tv. he wound up stealing 100 bases that year, starting his run of seven consecutive american league stolen base titles. this was a big deal to me as i fancied davey lopes as a premier base stealer, and rickey was on a completely different level.

in 1982, rickey was stealing bases at a record pace, on his way to breaking lou brock's single season record. a youth group that i was involved in at the time secured tickets to a game in anaheim between the angels and a's, and we headed out for what was only my second visit to the big a. i don't know the exact date, but billy martin argued with an umpire and rickey stole a base, so i was a happy fan.

i didn't see rickey play in person again until september 21, 1996 when he was with the padres. i drove down the 5 to see the dodgers take on the pads in the heat of a divisional race that had me nervous. the dodgers had held off the padres in 1995, but it seemed to me like they were destined to fall to san diego in '96 thanks to the performance of ken caminiti and his magic snickers bar. the dodgers won the game i attended, and rickey was held to a single and no stolen bases (or attempts). it was weird to see him in a padre uniform, but not as strange as seeing him wearing dodger blue during his last season in the majors.

    1. agree. sounds like the title of a fable for the criminally inclined - a story about the "henderson thieves three", a trio of bandits who fail to provide for their families despite successful careers as burglars due to crushing gambling addictions.

  4. I saw Rickey play in Yankee Stadium as a Yankee, and much later in his career as a Red Sox. In the Red Sox game he got hurt and left the game. After the game there was an ambulance outside Yankee Stadium and everyone passing by was shouting "Rickey!"

    1. funny story. it's too bad he didn't stick his head out and wave (if he had been in the ambulance).
