billy williams is in my hall of famer collection

billy williams was a fairly recent addition to my hall of famer collection. in january of this year, i picked up this card as his entry:

that's a 2013 topps museum collection autograph, numbered 054/199. it looks nice with the blue sharpie complementing the blue accents of the cub uniform williams is wearing.

truth be told, i first learned of williams as a member of the oakland a's. his 1976 topps card was the first of his i saw, and when i turned the card over to see the stats, i was impressed. as a young fan just learning about the game and its players - especially those not active or included in the 1978 topps set - i used the back of cards to judge a player's ability, and williams' card back made me take notice. it featured 17 of his 18 seasons, and showed over 400 home runs to his name. as i said, i was impressed. 

i didn't think too much more about williams until 1983 when steve garvey was approaching his all-time national league consecutive game streak. williams wasn't yet a hall of famer at that point (he was enshrined in 1987), but the fact that he had played in 1,117 consecutive games while with the cubs meant that he was in the local southern california news as the '83 campaign began. garvey, who had joined the padres, was due to break williams' record early in the season, and at dodger stadium as fate would have it.

my dad took us to the game (i wrote about that experience here). it was a great all-around evening for me, and williams was a part of it. he spoke to the crowd and i recall being annoyed when he stated that he wasn't sure garvey would reach gehrig's 2,130 consecutive game mark even though he was right. i never saw him play, but i appreciated his career and achievements as they correlated to what my favorite player was accomplishing.
