adrian beltre is in my hall of famer collection

during my fandom, the dodgers have traded away a lot of prospects. they've also chosen not to re-sign a number of free agents - even free agents coming off productive seasons. the first time i was made aware of this was in december of 1980, when don sutton signed with the astros after leading the national league in era as a dodger the previous season.  two years later, it was steve garvey's turn to leave.  both times, i was disappointed, but the team bounced back with successful campaigns that made the loss of those favorites easier to tolerate.  that was not the case with adrian beltre.

here's his 2019 topps tier one talent autograph card which serves as his entry in my hall of famer collection:
here's the back:
yes, i know he is not in the hall of fame yet, but just you wait. he's a no-doubter.

beltre put up a monster year with the dodgers in 2004, but then signed with the mariners in the offseason. he had been the dodger third baseman for over six seasons and had brought some stability to the position that had been lacking it for about 15 years. i was sad to see him go, and even though i understood that he had only put up those numbers (which remained as his career highs for runs scored, home runs, rbi, and batting average) in a walk year, he was only 25.  plus, the 2005 dodgers sucked. mike edwards was no adrian beltre.

beltre was not yet up with the dodgers in april of 1998 when i saw them play at wrigley field.  that means that the first time i saw beltre play in person was on august 28, 1998.  i had decided to head back to southern california to witness the return of mike piazza to chavez ravine. this was something that i liked to do - my dad had us go to the first series that the padres played in los angeles in 1983 so that we could see steve garvey's return (and consecutive game 1,118!), and i later made sure to attend wayne gretzky's first game at the fabulous forum as a member of the st. louis blues in 1996 after seeing so many games there with him in the silver and black.  anyway, beltre made an appearance in that game against the mets as a pinch-hitter and walked.

i was able to see him play as a member of the dodgers several times after that, but none were more memorable than what i witnessed in milwaukee on may 23, 2002.  beltre was 0 for 4 that day heading in to the 9th inning at milwaukee.  he came up with two out and a runner on second.  now, this was significant because in the on-deck circle was shawn green, who up to that point had three home runs, a double, and a single on the day.  beltre needed to reach base in order for green to have a shot at either a cycle or a fourth home run.  by this time, my buddy and i had been able to move in to seats a few rows up behind home plate, so we had a good look at beltre as he hit a home run to extend the inning and allow green to bat.  of course, green hit his fourth homer of the game shortly thereafter, and i was eternally grateful to beltre for hitting his home run to make it possible.

i later saw beltre in chicago and seattle as a mariner, and as a ranger in minneapolis although i never saw him during his one season with boston. i am ok with the card in my collection being of him with the rangers because i did follow his tenure in texas pretty closely as his offensive numbers bounced back and he began seriously marching towards 3,000 hits and (i was hoping) 500 home runs.  he fell short of 500 dingers, but made it well past 3,000 hits.

each time that beltre became a free agent, i hoped that he would sign with the dodgers, but it just wasn't in the cards.  now he will forever wear a rangers' cap when he gets his well deserved call to the hall.

  1. I don't think I've ever seen Beltre's auto before - it's very nice. He really sneaked(snuck?) up on me as a HOFer. Once he settled in with the Rangers I saw his career numbers and thought "when did that happen?" just one of those guys I never paid attention to, except for that one year in Boston.

    1. aside from one or two seasons, he was definitely a slow and steady stat builder which doesn't always grab the headlines.

  2. Do you not have a Dodger auto or did you prefer another team anyway? I grabbed up a lot of Beltre sigs before everyone realized where he was headed. Glad I did, but I have no huge love for him either. Just love Dodger autos!

    1. i do have one or maybe two beltre dodger autos. his fancier sigs are from his texas days, and i am ok with having him as a ranger in this collection.

  3. Love me some Beltre. My fanfare really developed in his later years while playing alongside Andrus. Those two were a crackup. Don't think I ever grabbed an autograph of him with the Rangers... but I have a few featuring him with the Dodgers.

  4. I don't usually care about such things, but I'll be interested in seeing what percentage he gets in with.

    1. i'd guess in the 90% range. it's hard to argue against his induction, but he didn't play in new york so he will be left off a few ballots.
