david ortiz is in my hall of famer collection

i hemmed and hawed and finally decided to add david ortiz to my hall of famer collection, with this card as his entry:

that's a 2017 topps clearly authentic autograph card, numbered 02/25.

ortiz made his big league debut for the twins in september of 1997, just about a month after i arrived in the state. when the 1998 season rolled around, a few of my new found friends had high hopes for him as an everyday player for the twins. he started the season pretty well, but broke his wrist in may and missed almost two months. in 1999, he wasn't called up to the majors until september, and he was a woeful 0 for 20 at the plate, with 12 strikeouts. he managed to stick with the team for the 2000 season, and in 2001 as well, although another broken wrist that year did cost him some playing time and had him out on a rehab assignment in the minors.

in 2002, ron gardenhire took over for tom kelly as the twins' manager, and ortiz seemed to respond positively to the change. he hit 20 homers for the first time as the team's primary dh and helped the twins advance to the alcs for the first time since 1991. unfortunately, they lost to the eventual world champion angels, and ortiz was memorably released by the club during the offseason. i went to a lot of twins games during ortiz' tenure although he wasn't always in the lineup. the first time i saw him play in person was on may 8, 1998 - the day before he broke his wrist. the twins lost to the yankees, and ortiz drove in the only twin run that day. the last time i saw him in person as a twin was in his final game at the metrodome in a minnesota uniform - game 2 of the 2002 alcs - in which he was 1 for 4.

ortiz was famously picked up by boston for the 2003 season, and he became 'big papi' in short order. he helped lead the red sox to the alcs in 2003 and then the world series championship in 2004, along with two more titles in 2007 and 2013. the dodgers played in boston in 2004 - the first time they had been there since the 1916 world series, and i went to all three games of the series. in the first game, derek lowe and odalis perez were engaged in a scoreless duel until ortiz led off the bottom of the 7th with a home run to break the tie. fenway got loud! the dodgers tied the game in the top of the 9th with two outs thanks to a manny ramirez error, but ortiz delivered (as he would in the alcs against the yankees) with a walk-off hit to give the red sox the win in the bottom of the inning. fenway got louder! it was too bad to see the dodgers lose, but it was an exciting game and a great thing to experience.

that game and feeling, along with the timing of ortiz' arrival in minnesota, are the reasons why i finally added him to this collection. i am assuming he will be inducted in to the hall of fame at some point (probably not first ballot), with a supposed positive test for performance enhancing drugs from 2003 being the lone mark against his accomplishments.
