joe dimaggio is in my hall of famer collection

a nation turned its lonely eyes to one joseph paul dimaggio, according to paul simon anyway, and i turned my attention to him once i decided to start this collection. my relative patience paid off eventually as i added this card to represent the yankee clipper in my hall of famer collection:

that is a 1993 pinnacle joe dimaggio collector's tin autograph card. it's one of five different cards that dimaggio signed, and it is number 716 of 1,800 of this particular version. here's the back:

the card is an oddball size, which kind of stinks because it is harder to store. still, it's a certified joe dimaggio autographed card! what an add to my collection this was!

i obviously never saw dimaggio play - he retired after the 1951 season which was almost two decades before i was born. however, i do not recall a time when i didn't know about his 56-game consecutive hit streak or his marriage to marilyn monroe. 

the first dimaggio card i owned was a dover reprint of his 1938 goudey heads up card, and i thought it was awesome. i primarily knew dimaggio as the guy from the mr. coffee commercials on tv, but quickly learned about his prowess on the diamond, his california roots, and his rare display of emotion after al gionfriddo's catch in the 1947 world series. i thought it was extremely cool that he played alongside lou gehrig and mickey mantle

dimaggio played 13 seasons (he missed three years due to armed forces service during world war ii) in the major leagues and made it to the world series 10 times. he won nine rings, losing only to stan musial and the st. louis cardinals in 1942.

i haven't read the complete biography published after dimaggio died in 1999, but i have read the part that deals with an annual hot stove dinner that was held in the area where i grew up. i used to go to that dinner every year before i moved away for college, and my dad even got me a gig serving food and busing tables a couple of times. the promoter of the dinner was a long time acquaintance of dimaggio's and convinced him to attend the dinner one year during the time that i was not living there. i guess the lure was the promise of a new cadillac that, when delivered to dimaggio, the yankee clipper asked "did you fill it with gas?". funny stuff, but i really wished i had attended the dinner that year.

there is only one more post scheduled for this collection, although i have swapped out a few cards that will be shown in a later post. after that, we'll have to wait and see who else fits the bill.
