pencils down on oddballs in my steve garvey collection

i posted awhile back about an item that had sat on my steve garvey want list from the beginning, and around the same time that i crossed that one off the list, i picked up another. this was a 1984 napco mlb pencil. i had seen them come and go on ebay over the years but never pulled the trigger. it was a bit too odd for my collection.

however, i wound up buying a garvey lot from the daughter of a collector and it included the pencil, along with two others that aren't catalogued anywhere:
here's the napco one all by itself:
i am guessing that it is the only one on the official list because it is authorized by mlb. the other two, i believe, were produced by a company called imprinted products. i am basing that on their design being similar to some other items we will get to in a bit.

this particular seller was parsing out her father's collection after he passed away. she had it broken up in to a few different lots, including one that included a gafline and another that featured the elusive 1987 douglas allred inside baseball solo garvey card. i missed out seeing either of those lots, unfortunately. and, while i soon thereafter picked up the gafline, i am still in need of the allred garvey (i do have the card from the set that features both allred and garvey). there was another lot i was interested in that had a 1999 dodger heroes patch, but by the time i inquired she had sold the remainder of the collection to a local card shop/dealer.

in addition to the pencils, there were a number of pins:
those pins include:
  • 2003 dodger stadium giveaway commemorative pin #1 record setting infield 30th anniversary
  • 1986 peter david national league pin
  • three pins from a signed and framed limited edition set of 10 pins called "steve garvey milestones from the garvey collection"
  • three dodgers unocal pins which were dodger stadium giveaways - dodger mvps (1988 pin #1), four teammates with 30 home runs (1991 pin #5), record setting infield (1991 pin #1)
i already had the sga pins, but figured i would show them with the others to give a sense of size.

here's a closer look at the framed pin set (to be clear, this was not included - only three of the pins):
you can see the three pins that i own at the beginning and end of the first row and the beginning of the second row. only the first one represents a milestone as far as i can tell, and it's garvey's two all-star game mvp awards from 1974 and 1978. this pin set was manufactured by the aforementioned imprinted products.

there were also some other pins, or if you prefer, buttons:
the lot only included the three larger buttons, but when i was trying to figure out if the padre photo button was the same as one on the official beckett garvey inventory, i discovered that it was not. instead, the smallest of the buttons is the elusive 1986 baseball star buttons issue, and i found one from a seller who didn't know what it was, and so got it for just a couple of bucks. that larger button that looks just like it would most likely have been sold at jack murphy stadium souvenir stands.  the other padre button was also made by imprinted products and may have been a souvenir stand item as well. i am assuming it was from 1986 or so. lastly, the dodger button is a big unknown for me. i used to have a dodger stadium souvenir stand garvey button, but it was larger and featured a different photo, along with his name in text and (i believe) a facsimile autograph.

i hadn't seen a steve garvey keychain before, but now i own one:
i assume this keychain was produced by imprinted products based on the image and style. that's also why i think that they made the non-namco pencils, but i don't know for sure.

more oddballs - two more mcgregor clothes tags for the collection:
these may be the strangest item in my garvey collection.

there were other oddballs along with some actual cards in the lot, all of which i already owned. with the pencils and the pins and the keychain and a couple more mcgregor tags, i think my non-card oddball garvey collection is as complete as it is going to get.

they weren't the last garvey non-card oddballs i purchased though. i mentioned i had missed out on a lot that included a full size 1999 dodger heroes garvey patch, but i soon found another for a good price
i wanted this one for my dodger collection. i already had one on my garvey jersey and one in my garvey collection (along with the mini version), so now this one sits in my dodger collection to accompany my heroes patches of ron cey, kirk gibson, and bill russell. i've thought about adding patches of tom lasorda, don sutton, fernando valenzuela, and rick monday but have held off so far. i don't think my oddball collections need any further additions!

  1. Non-card baseball stuff doesn't tend to excite me much, but Steve Garvey pencils?? Those are 100 times cooler than the Ticonderoga ones I used in school.

    1. i don't recall seeing player pencils as a grade schooler when i would have been excited about them. i did have some team pencils, just like fuji mentions below.

  2. These collectibles are awesome! I love that framed Garvey milestone pin set. And seeing those pencils reminds me of when I was little. I used to collect football (and maybe baseball) pencils. No individual players though. They were team pencils. I'd use all of my least favorite team pencils first.

    1. i remember have a seahawks pencil randomly. maybe a bengals one, too. they definitely got used or perhaps were sacrificed in fourth grade pencil fights.
