home a-loney

what if i told you that i have never seen the film "home alone" or its sequel(s)? i suppose some christmas season i should buckle down and watch it, but i am familiar with the general story line so i am not sure what there is to gain by actually watching the movie(s).

anyway, last fall when i was going through some boxes of cards, i found that i had not previously recognized the player sliding in to home on victor martinez's 2012 topps and topps opening day cards
i didn't notice probably because the dodger player is wearing the powder blue 1940's-esque brooklyn throwback uniforms that the team wore at home for a handful of day games in the 2011 season. a quick check of baseball reference confirms that martinez took a throw in the fourth inning of a game on june 22 from right fielder magglio ordonez on june 22 to nail james loney at the plate, and, a quick google search turned up an article that confirmed the dodgers were to be wearing the throwbacks that day. both cards are now safely in my dodger and other notable players lurker mini-collection.

as a side note, the first game i attended at miller park (it was the night game before shawn green's four-homer game) was a throwback uniform affair between the brewers and the dodgers. the brewers wore milwaukee braves uniforms, but the dodgers didn't change their uniforms at all, which was a bit disappointing. i am also still bummed that they never broke out the 1916 brooklyn checkered uniforms four years ago to recognize the 100th anniversary of that pennant winning team.

anyway, merry christmas to all and to all a good night.
