carl yastrzemski is in my hall of famer collection

i was pretty young when i committed the spelling of carl yastrzemski's last name to memory. sure, calling him yaz was easier, but having the all-star shield on your 1978 topps card earns you the respect of a new baseball fan.  mr. yastrzemski is in my hall of famer collection with this card as his entry:

that's a 2000 fleer greats of the game autograph. one of the nicest of the early autograph sets out there. here's the back:

by the time i began following baseball, yaz was firmly entrenched in his multi-position status as an "of-1b",  and jim rice was, to me, the red sox left fielder. i still thought highly of yaz thanks to the aforementioned all-star shield on his 1978 topps card which was quite the status symbol in my eyes. then, in 1979, i began to spend a fair amount of time learning about baseball history. i was fascinated by the links to the past that the modern game provided, and my mind was somewhat blown when i learned that yaz succeeded ted williams as the red sox left fielder in 1961. i had no real concept of how long players' careers lasted at that time, but the fact that yaz was still active after immediately succeeding a guy who i only knew from the history books was quite impressive. 

at the same time, i learned that yaz had won the triple crown in 1967, and was the most recent player to have done so. as i followed the annual leader boards in the sunday los angeles times, i saw legitimate attempts by jim rice and mike schmidt to achieve the feat fall short and so understood how rare an accomplishment that was.

i never saw yaz play in person, but i did watch him on tv a few times. i particularly recall the 1979 all-star game wherein he started at first base for the injured (and lead vote-getter) rod carew after being voted in as a starter in the outfield. later that same season, yaz joined lou brock in the 3000 hit club, but while brock retired after the season, yaz kept playing. he wound up playing through the 1983 season, and when he retired, no man had played in more major league baseball games than carl yastrzemski.

younger fans may know of yaz because his grandson plays for the giants, or because he and his muttonchop sideburns were featured on the simpsons, but i am of an age that can recall when he was an all-star player. i wouldn't have it any other way.
