tom glavine is in my hall of famer collection

tom glavine is a first-ballot hall of famer, but he wasn't in my initial roster for my hall of famer collection. after some thought last summer, i changed my mind. he's in my collection with this card as his entry:
that's a 2019 topps tribute autograph numbered 18/90. here's the back:
growing up as a baseball fan, i believed that there was a universal truth: 300 wins or 3,000 strikeouts makes one a lock for cooperstown. there just weren't that many pitchers who had achieved those milestones. so, i was a bit confused when gaylord perry and fergie jenkins didn't get the call in 1989. they eventually were voted in on their third ballot, but then there was phil niekro in 1993 and don sutton in 1994 and bert blyleven in 1998 and so it was apparent that those numbers weren't automatic - at least not first ballot automatic, since those guys were eventually enshrined.  so, when tom glavine became eligible for induction, i did not expect him to make it on his first try even though he had 305 victories to his name. however, he did enter cooperstown on the first ballot.

mike mussina was on the same ballot for induction in 2014 (as was no-doubter greg maddux), and his numbers were similar to glavine's aside from the 300 wins. mussina (whom i considered to be a borderline candidate) only received 20.3% of the vote while glavine received 91.9%. it didn't make sense to me.  maybe i begrudged glavine his early entry while the pitchers i followed as a youngster had to wait.

glavine pitched 22 years in the majors (almost to the day) and amassed two cy young awards, a world series mvp award, and 2,607 strikeouts to go along with his 1,500 walks, 3.52 era, and 1.314 whip. even with a couple of those bloated numbers, there is no denying that he was a very good pitcher, and he showed me as much the one time i saw him pitch in person.  it was opening day at dodger stadium on april 8, 1996 and glavine and the braves were facing hideo nomo. the dodgers won 1-0 behind a complete game from nomo, but glavine was strong as well. he pitched 7 innings and had 9 strikeouts. he allowed only five hits (all singles), but unfortunately for him, three of them came in the same inning. it was a good ol' fashioned pitchers' duel, and i loved every minute of it.

here's my hall of famer collection as its been documented so far:

  1. Had to do some digging... but here's an article I read about Mussina and Glavine a while back:

    https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/comparing-the-career-resumes-of-tom-glavine-mike-mussina/

I think for me I always favored Glavine over Mussina, because he played on those awesome Braves teams... while Mussina eventually played for the Yankees. But their numbers are a lot closer than I ever thought.

    1. thanks for that link fuji! it matches my thinking very closely. i'm glad they are both in the hall as i am more of a "big hall" guy i guess.

  2. I remember him mostly from the early 90's, I didn't pay much attention to him after that. 300 wins should get you into the HOF, no matter what your other numbers were. The way things are going now, 200 wins might be an automatic lock for current and future players, because I don't think that too many more, if any, will be reaching the 300 mark.

    1. i agree, jon. i don't think there is anyone active under 30 who has even 200 wins right now.
