jim thome is in my hall of famer collection

jim thome was elected to the hall of fame in 2018, and he's the first player to be featured from my hall of famer collection in 2021. here's his entry, a 2020 topps archives signature series 2012 topps mini autograph card, numbered 1/1:

thome's presence with the indians (his original team) in the 1990's was overshadowed in my collection by manny ramirez, kenny lofton, orel hershiser, and carlos baerga. i even had a pc of albert belle going, and didn't pay a whole lot of attention to thome. i saw him play once at angels stadium in the early stages of his career, but the only thing i remember from that game is how hard belle hit the ball on a no-doubter homer to left.

the next time i saw thome play in person was may of 2000 at the metrodome. by that time, i had discontinued my carlos baerga player collection and had added thome to the list of players i collected.  he went 3 for 4 that night, with a double and a home run against a pretty bad twins team.  these were the games that i would go to and buy a discounted ticket for the upper deck and move down to near home plate by the fifth inning. good times.

in may of 2006, i was in chicago for work and a coworker and i headed to us cellular field to see the white sox play the mariners.  i was pretty excited to see felix hernandez and ichiro and adrian beltre, but it is thome that i remember. he took hernandez deep in the bottom of the first with a majestic blast and the mariners never recovered.

most of the games in which i saw thome play in person, however, took place at target field where he played for the twins in 2010 and 2011. this followed his short stint with the dodgers which was largely forgettable, and serving as a designated hitter seemed to make a big difference in his performance. he had many memorable games as a twin, including hitting the first walk-off hit (a 10th inning home run) in target field history, as well as hitting the flagpole in right field with another mammoth blast.  the games i saw in which he played didn't produce such drama, but i was present for his first home run hit at target field on april 17, 2010.

thome was quick to become a twins-fan favorite and was a no-brainer for my hall of famer collection. i am glad i found a twins card to represent him in my collection!
