joe morgan is in my hall of famer collection

most of the players included in my hall of famer collection are represented by certified on-card autographed cards. the others are represented by relic cards due to unavailability or prohibitive pricing of autographed cards meeting my criteria. joe morgan is the only one to be represented by both an on-card autograph and relic card. here is his entry in my hall of famer collection:

there aren't a lot of on-card autographed cards of morgan out there, but i don't feel like i settled for this one. the late 1990s/early 2000s upper deck legends/hall of famers sets were some of my favorite from that time period.

that is a 2002 fleer greats of the game autograph that was reissued in the 2004 fleer national pastime release as a buyback autograph. hence the numbering of 43/57.  here's the back:

joe morgan was also a favorite of mine from the late 1970s into the 1980s. his 1978 topps card, my first introduction to him, had the all-star shield which put him in rarified air as far as i was concerned. even though he was a member of the big red machine, the dodgers' biggest division threat (though not their greatest rival), i followed his career and enjoyed mimicking his batting stance in neighborhood wiffle ball games.

i saw morgan play in person at dodger stadium with the reds and then again in 1980 with the astros. that particular occurrence was on april 18, 1980 which also happened to be the first ever baseball card night at dodger stadium. while i was enjoying looking at my oversized 1980 dodgers police baseball card set, morgan and the astros were beating the dodgers 7-4 behind ken forsch and joaquin andujar. morgan was 1 for 3 with an rbi, 2 runs scored, and 2 walks in the game. aside from the cards, the thing i recall most from that game was that derrel thomas (!) was the dodgers' catcher, and he homered in the game. 

even though morgan went to the giants prior to the 1981 season, it wasn't until 1982 that my fandom of joe morgan took a turn when he broke my heart in game 162 by hitting a go-ahead 3-run home run off of terry forster to effectively eliminate the dodgers from a chance at a division title and playoff berth.  morgan went on to play for the phillies in 1983 and then finished his career with his hometown a's in 1984.
