steal of the draft and mr. irrelevant

i didn't sign up for the first card draft hosted by the diamond king, but i did request entry into the second one, and i am glad i did! in addition to it being a fun event, i offloaded some cards and added some others that are better suited to my collection.  the random draft order generator slotted me in at 9 - the last pick of the odd rounds and first pick of the even. let's see what i chose.

first pick, last of round 1 - 1997 pacific crown collection todd hollandsworth card-supials insert
i was able to join the draft live, but had sent my ranked list of the cards available just in case. just as the draft began, kevin noted that everyone would likely get their number 1 pick (except for him). i was happy to hear that because this hollandsworth card was unknown to me (my want lists from the mid 90's don't seem to include all inserts due to a lack of information).

what i didn't know was that this card was the complete card-supial! the mini card was included!
that's the card back with the mini (front and back) next to it. big thanks to whomever contributed this card to the draft! here's what the back looks like
when the mini is safely tucked into the "pouch". i didn't line it up very well with the dugout roof. i was more than happy to trade all of the cards i contributed for this one (really, two) dodger need. steal of the draft!

second pick, first of round 2 - 2005 fleer tradition vladimir guerrero stand outs insert
this was a need for my vladdy collection. the card is embossed which makes sense when you call a insert set "stand outs".

third pick, last of round 3 - 1974 topps steve garvey
i couldn't leave garvey sitting there any longer. i have a much more mangled '74 topps garvey in my wallet. maybe one day i will swap it out for this one.

fourth pick, first of round 4 - 1997 bbm? takahito nomura card
one of the more unique cards in the draft, i have this one earmarked for another blogger - hopefully as part of an in person swap.

fifth pick, last of round 5 - 2005 topps pristine bobby thomson
2005 pristine is a nice looking set, and i don't have too many non-dodgers from it.

sixth pick, first of round 6 - 2021 topps heritage high numbers jake cronenworth
more superimposed heritage photo mashups, but the big rookie cup and rc logo is a rare-ish combination.

seventh pick, last of round 7 - 1983 topps steve carlton
i really fell for the 1983 design when it was released, and so i bought a lot of it. pretty sure lefty here is pitching in shea on opening day, 1982.

eighth pick, first of round 8 - 1986 topps traded tom seaver
back-to-back with the elite lefty/righty pitchers of my youth. this is a pretty poor airbrush effort, by the way.

ninth pick, last of round 9 - 2021 topps update francisco mejia gold parallel #/2021
so francisco mejia is mr. irrelevant in this draft. i like gold parallels, however, and he was once a pretty well thought of prospect. maybe he gets it together in tampa - his third franchise in his 5-year career.

i was happy to see that 8 of the cards i submitted were claimed. hopefully i will be able to participate in another draft and see if i can get all of the cards i sent chosen by others for their collection.  thanks kevin!

  1. I sent in the Hollandsworth and am very happy that it went to someone who was excited to get it. Wasn't sure if it would even get drafted given that it's not readily apparent that it was actually one of Pacific's many oddball inserts from the 90s, so I was equal parts surprised and pleased that it got picked so early. I had never actually seen any of the Cardsupials inserts until I got two copies of that Hollandsworth in a large lot a few years back - they are definitely interesting.

  2. The draft was a whole lot of fun! Love that Hollandsworth - didn't realize it came with the mini in the "pouch" as well! Had that one high on my list but figured it would go pretty quickly. (Looks like you ended up taking two of the cards I submitted - Vlad & Thomson.)

  3. The Nomura and Carlton are my favorites here. Good picks.
    The cardsupial seems fun though.

  4. The 1986 Topps Traded Seaver in the 8th round is fantastic! I mean... you drafted a lot of cool stuff... and I thought the Garvey, Cronenworth, and Carlton were all steals for the rounds they were drafted in... but the Seaver is by far the best steal. Great stuff.

    1. seaver doesn't seem to get as much attention from collector's as some of his contemporaries but he was a favorite of mine during his career.

  6. What a silly name, card-supial. Neat idea though, but I'd totally lose the mini

  7. Looks like you grabbed 3 of my submissions. You have good taste in cards.
    That Hollandsworth is cool.

  8. The Hollandsworth was at the bottom portion of my ranked list, but may have grabbed it for the 'oddball' factor [if it lasted into the 5-6 rounds] and if I knew it was a 'card-supial' insert, a card within a card.

    1. maybe kevin will feature front and back photos next time. there was at least one numbered card that i contributed that wasn't noted as such because the number was on the back.
