tomorrow is the 95th anniversary of eddie collins joining the 3,000 hit club. how do i know? i know because collins is in my hall of famer collection, represented by this card:
the milestone topps is celebrating here is that hit by collins on june 3, 1925 that added him to the club that, at that time, included cap anson, honus wagner, nap lajoie, ty cobb, and tris speaker. speaker, in fact, had joined the club just a couple of weeks before collins. the hit, a single, marked the first time that another member of the 3,000 hit club was on the field when a new member joined, as ty cobb was managing and playing centerfield for the opposing tigers that day. collins was a member of the white sox when he got the hit, and was also serving as a player-manager. topps, however, chose to show collins as a member of the philadelphia a's for the purposes of this card.
collins debuted with the a's in 1907 while he was still in college, and was a part of their '$100,000' infield in 1911. he helped the a's to world series titles in 1910, 1911, and 1913, and was the league mvp in 1914, although the a's lost in the fall classic that year to the miracle braves. after that season, however, his contract was sold to the white sox as part of connie mack's dismantling of the team. he helped the white sox to the 1917 world series championship, and he also helped them win the pennant in 1919, the year of the infamous black sox scandal. in all, collins spent 13 seasons with the a's sandwiched around 12 with the white sox.
collins ended his career with a .333 lifetime average, a .424 on-base-percentage, 3,315 hits, and 741 stolen bases. with those numbers, collins still failed to be voted in to the hall of fame for three years before making it on the 1939 ballot. that timing, however, still allowed him to be part of the class present at the opening of the hall, and so he appeared in the famous photograph of the living hall of famers (minus ty cobb), which gained him a place in my hall of famer collection as a result.

I didn't realize Collins' lifetime stats were so good. The average is robust and 700+ steals is an eye popping number.
ReplyDeleteSweet card. I'd love to add a memorabilia card or vintage card of Collins to my A's collection one day. In the meantime... I'll just stare at yours.
