today is what would have been tommy lasorda's 97th birthday. it's hard for me to believe that someone from my youth could be that old, but that's the way things work. i will sometimes search for cards of lasorda - i haven't added any of his recent panini cards yet, but i did pick up this one a few months back
that's a cooperstown signatures autograph from 2012 panini cooperstown. i had, at one time, toyed with the idea of adding 1978 topps managers who have been inducted into the hall of fame to my hall of famer collection, and if i ever come across a second one of these at a decent price i just might follow through. of course, i would also need autographs from sparky anderson (i had one at one point from 2001 fleer greats of the game in addition to the 2004 ud legends card in my partial autograph parallel set build), whitey herzog, bobby cox, joe torre, dick williams, and earl weaver. i already have bob lemon in my hall of famer collection, but he was inducted as a player.
lasorda was one of just fifteen surviving brooklyn dodgers prior to his passing in 2021. that number is now down to just five, including tommy brown who has his own 97th birthday coming up in december. lasorda may be gone, but he is certainly not forgotten.
Most of those managers don't seem like they'd be terribly expensive to collect if you do ever decide to add them to the HOF collection.
ReplyDeleteThat 1978 manager project would be a fun project. I think I have all of those managers in my collection except Sparky. I might need Cox too. I owned a Triple Threads autograph of his years ago... but I may have sold it during the pandemic when I started purging my sticker auto collection.
