so, without further ado, here is the one person for whom number 50 has been retired:
jimmie reese (retired by the angels in 1995) 1976 sspc
let's hear it for coach cards! reese's 1976 sspc card gives us just a part of his number, but i count myself lucky to have a card of reese at all for this collection. he actually has a couple of other cards to choose from - 1991 bowman and 1991 studio - but this one had the best view of his number.
reese played in the majors over the course of three seasons - 1930 and 1931 with the yankees (where he roomed with babe ruth on road trips) and 1932 with the cardinals - but spent most of his playing career in the pacific coast league where he spent time with the los angeles angels. it wasn't until the early 1970's, however, that he joined the california angels franchise as a coach on bobby winkles' staff. reese remained in uniform as a coach wearing number 50 until his death in 1994 at the age of 92.
in recognition of his time with the club, and the high regard in which he was held by the players (including his good friend nolan ryan), the angels posthumously retired his number on august 2, 1995 as part of a ceremony that also inducted reese into the team's hall of fame.
i think it is pretty likely that mookie betts will have his number 50 retired by the dodgers when his career is completed, but for now, reese is the lone person to have that honor.
