golden brown

it took me almost 20 years to complete the dodger team set from 2000 topps gold label, and all it took was three kevin brown cards.  shawn green is the only other dodger in the set, and i had owned his three cards (class 1, 2, and 3) for years.

this sort of pickup might have gone undocumented, but i like the cards and with today being brown's 55th birthday, i figured i would publish a quick post.

here's class 1
while i was not a fan of the davey johnson era blue jerseys that were worn in a few games, it's good to have cardboard evidence of their existence. and, truth be told, i have one of those jerseys in my closet somewhere.

class 2
that's better with the home whites. this card gives us a good look at the contraband sandy koufax heroes patch that brown wore during the 1999 season. koufax was not a fan of the fox ownership if i recall correctly, and did not approve of his image being used.  as a result, his patches were not made available for sale to the public like the others.

class 3
i appreciate how these cards show the progression of brown's pitching delivery.  this last one also gives a blurry look at one of the murals in the background. you know i was a fan of the murals.  i'd have to check to see if i ever saw brown pitch in person (i am thinking i saw him as a padre and as a dodger), but i do recall standing nearby while he threw a bullpen session or two. he made the catcher's glove pop, that's for sure.

so that's another team set down and a seemingly infinite number to go. happy birthday kevin brown!

  1. Makes me wanna get out of bed, open up my Gwynn binder and see if I have all 3 classes of him. Nope. I'm too tired. Maybe tomorrow morning. Congratulations on finishing off the team set.
