for the love of all that is holy, avert your eyes

it has been a long time since i've looked for - let alone added - a tristar signa cuts card. for whatever reason, i took a peek at available inventory around the start of the year and wound up purchasing this 2008 brutalization of steve howe's 1984 topps card
i will never have certified autographs of all of the dodger rookies of the year, but with this howe card in hand, i have examples of each dodger roy from 1980 on except for 1995 winner hideo nomo. that would mean i have auto cards of these guys:

cody bellinger (2017)
corey seager (2016)
todd hollandsworth (1996)
raul mondesi (1994)
mike piazza (1993)
eric karros (1992)
steve sax (1982)
fernando valenzuela (1981)
steve howe (1980)

i also have certified autos of joe black (1952), don newcombe (1949), and frank howard (1960). howard is my newest addition, thanks to this 2001 topps archives autograph card
that i added not too long ago. this all means i am missing jackie robinson (1947), jim gilliam (1953), jim lefebvre (1965), ted sizemore (1969), rick sutcliffe (1979) and the aforementioned nomo.

of those, i only know of a certified cut robinson dodger autograph. the nomos that i have seen feature him in non-dodger uniforms - same with the sutcliffes. i don't think the other two modern players (lefebvre and sizemore) have any certified autos regardless of team.

and so, i will likely continue to periodically check the airwaves for signa cuts, even though they are destroyers of cards.

  1. Impressive list. Looks like Jim Lefebvre has a certified autograph in 2013 BBM Legendary Foreigners (/108), fwiw. https://www.tcdb.com/Checklist.cfm/sid/105466

  2. 2008 Tristar Signa Cuts is such a memorable product for all the wrong reasons. I actually have a Steve Sax autograph from that product. He signed it on a white label that Tristar mounted and called a "cut' signature :D. It's so bad... I LOVE IT.

    1. i can picture the tristar staffer going into office depot and buying a bunch of the white mailing labels that they used. i try to limit my signa cuts to mutilated cards but i might have to go for one of the avery label autos.

  3. Looks like the card was cut in such a way to match the angle that Howe signed his name, and also avoid the Topps logo being anywhere on the front or back.

  4. I have twelve Bill Virdon Signa-Cuts in my PC but none were brutalized as bad as that one. I see no reason at all for them to have trimmed the left edge of that card not to mention trimming it in a weird circle.

  5. These were absolute garbage. A few Garvey cards looked OK, but most are appalling. I added a bunch when they were new, but unwilling to pay a premium now and apparently some people still are paying premiums for these. I think Levebvre and Gilliam were in a weird 4 player cut series by one of the off brand autograph sellers, like Historic Autographs. It's hard for me to consider cuts as certfied, since they were only buying TTM/IP autographs anyway. Who's to say they didn't buy some fakes? However, I have used them to represent older Dodgers who died before pack certified autographs were a thing. Jim Bunning, Juan Marichal and Hoyt Wilhelm are 3 that I wish had some sort of certified Dodger autograph card. Yet to see one though.
