alan trammell is in my hall of famer collection

i was surprised when alan trammell was voted in to the hall of fame by the veterans' committee.  not that he is not deserving, just that i was ignorant of any real outcry over his omission by the bbwaa. he seemed like a "hall of very good" player to me, but then again, i did not really follow the tigers too closely while trammell was playing.  here's his 2001 fleer greats of the game autograph card as his entry in to my hall of famer collection:
here's the back:
i've said it before - this is one of my favorite retired player sets.

one of my favorite sets ever is 1978 topps, which is where i first saw alan trammell.  he was on a 4-in-1 rookie card along with mickey klutts, ul washington, and paul molitor.  as the seasons went on, i recognized that card pretty much only as the molitor rookie card as i took a liking to the brewer over the tiger. in the end, both guys finished behind (molitor in second, trammell tied for fourth) trammell's teammate lou whitaker in the rookie of the year balloting.

trammell showed up on my radar again in 1984 as his tigers faced the padres and steve garvey in the world series.  i was, of course, rooting for the padres in that matchup, but it was the tigers who won. trammell wound up as the mvp of the series, and i lost a few bucks to a friend.

  1. Greats of the Game autos are fantastic, especially 2000 and 2001.

  2. I was on the side of Trammell being a Hall of Very Good guy... but then again... I'm a small hall kind of guy. That being said... I loved the Trammell and Whitaker tandem of the 80's. And that GOTG autograph is really nice. Solid design that allows the signature to really stand out.

  3. I'm kind of surprised that he got in as well, especially with so many more deserving players still waiting in the wings.
