updating my retired number collection - another 10

last saturday, the tigers retired number 10 for their former manager and newly inducted hall of famer jim leyland. here's his entry into my retired number collection:

jim leyland (retired by the tigers in 2024) 2009 topps heritage
i couldn't find any cards of leyland that showed his number, so the 2009 heritage card will have to do. as the tigers' skipper, leyland led them to two pennants during his eight year tenure which lasted from 2006 through 2013. his tiger teams won a total of 700 games which puts him third on the club's all-time list behind sparky anderson and hughie jennings.

leyland became the fifth manager who wore number 10 to have their number retired, following dick howser, tony larussa, tom kelly, and anderson, who switched from 10 to 11 when he went from the reds to the tigers (anderson's 11 is retired by detroit). no tiger player wore number 10 in the years since leyland's managerial stint ended, so i am guessing the club had plans to retire it eventually. leyland's election to the hall of fame, courtesy of the eras committee (the only path for managers, i believe) obviously cemented the club's plans to honor their former skipper.

you can see the other personnel for whom 10 has been retired in an earlier post here, and you can see all of the retired number cards in my collection at my want list site here.

  1. Great looking card of Leyland. I love the 1960 Topps manager cards.
