in november of 2023, padres' chairman peter seidler passed away. in his memory, the team has been wearing a heart shaped patch with seidler's initials on their left chest during the 2024 season. with new sets coming out, like 2024 topps chrome, we are starting to get a look at 2024 action on cardboard, including this yuki matsui card
seidler, the founder of a private equity firm, was the grandson of walter o'malley (his mother, terry, was a member of the dodgers' board of directors for my entire fandom of the o'malley owned version of the dodgers) and he helped form the o'malley group with his uncle peter and another businessman named ron fowler to purchase the padres in 2012. eventually, seidler bought fowler out and became the majority owner of the club.
under his watch, the team began investing more money in free agents and eventually returned to the postseason in 2020 and again in 2022. in each of those seasons, the padres advanced beyond the wild card series, and their nlds win against the dodgers in 2022 has to have been the franchise's top accomplishment of seidler's ownership.
