1955 bowman complete through 48!

there are no hall of famers on this sheet of the 1955 bowman set, so there weren't any cards that were tough for me to track down, although there are a couple of interest. with my set now complete through 48, here are cards 41-48 in the set:
and here are the backs:
after the snafu on the last sheet, we are back to paired teammates.

mickey vernon is the biggest name here, at least to me. he was a two-time batting champ who never really got close to the hall of fame with the voters. his career is a bit of a "what might have been" had he not lost two prime years to military service during world war ii. he likely would have not reached 3,000 hits, but could have been between 2,800 and 2,900 based on his performance immediately following his return to the big leagues.

the other card of note is milt bolling's at number 48. there are two versions of this card. the one in the sheet above is the correct version, showing the back for milt bolling. the second version of the card has the same front, but the back
is for frank bolling, milt's brother. we will see similar variations when we get to frank's spot in the checklist. such is the risk you run when you only put last names on the fronts of the cards, although the team affiliation (milt played for the red sox and frank played for the tigers) should have been a giveaway that something was amiss with the wrong backed cards.

  1. A fun set to collect. I have all but 5, which I filled in with reprints. But your post is a reminder that I should go after the corrected version of #48!

  2. It's so cool that they ended up being paired up on the page.

  3. It should be mentioned too that the photo used for Mel Clark's card is really great.
