through with blue

in my last post, i mentioned some cards were included in my comc order that would show up in other posts. this is one of those posts.

i decided at some point while building my shopping cart grab parallels from 2013 topps update. the post yesterday showed the target red parallels i bought, and here are the four walmart blue parallels that were in the order

scott van slyke, juan uribe, brian wilson, and one of three yasiel puig cards from the set. these four cards left me five from completing the team set, and i was able to find the others pretty easily.

completing the update parallel set means that i now have all of the 2013 dodgers' walmart blue parallels, as i had completed the flagship series 1 and 2 team sets a while ago. this feat goes well with my full run of the dodger emerald parallels from 2013. the 2013 flagship design offers up ample border space to fill with color, and i suppose that is one of the main reasons that i've been interested in picking up these parallels over the last 13 years.

i will probably turn a focus to the six remaining target red parallels i need from update so that i can match the target parallels to the emerald and walmart ones, as i have already completed the series 1 and 2 team set in red border form. after that, it's likely that i take a run at the gold parallels (it certainly won't be the seemingly scarce toys 'r us purple borders).

being my most recent pickups. will i get it done? probably? it helps to focus, and i am trying to do that more and more when it comes to team collecting. stay tuned!

wilson!

over 14 years ago i discovered that my 1990 topps dodger team collection was missing mike davis' card (sorry mike!). history repeated itself earlier last summer as i was entering my dodger collection in to tcdb. when i got to the 1992 score set - a set that i had marked "dodgers complete" - i found that i was missing steve wilson. and, unlike the 1990 topps davis card, i did not have a bunch of 1992 score wilson cards sitting among my dupes.

i quickly added a wilson card to a sportlots order

and now my team set is complete.

similarly, i found that i had a promo version of this card

from 1992 donruss triple play but not the actual card. that, too, has been rectified and tcdb has been updated.

speaking of tcdb, it has taken me awhile to get to entering cards from my mini-collections, but i have been able to add most of them. there are still some i haven't entered, including my dodger stadium and my double play collections. i keep adding cards to those collections, however, including this fantastic 2001 topps fusion card

that nick at dime boxes turned me on to. it features one of the great moments in dodger stadium murals - manny mota's, in fact - that i love to see on cardboard so much. i don't know how i missed this example back when i was scrutinizing cards from the early 2000s for any sign of the murals.

i went back and forth about picking up this 2022 topps now turn back the clock card of jim palmer

but finally relented. it shows him pitching in dodger stadium during the 1966 world series. long gone are those low-rise paneled railings, but they are a dead giveaway for dodger stadium with pre-mccourt era photos.

as for double plays, i've added a 1985 topps sticker showing the dp combo of alan trammell and lou whitaker eliminating luis salazar

during the ninth inning of game three 1984 world series. not shown is tony gwynn who grounded to whitaker to start this play. gwynn made it safely to first base, but then steve garvey flew out to end the game.

recompleting a set only to find it once again incomplete

last night's post was all about cards that i received from nick at dime boxes, but i have one more card that he sent to share:

that's a 1990 baseball wit card of short-time dodger hack wilson.

i had made it a point a while back to complete this set, but for whatever reason i went to my spreadsheet to confirm that i did, in fact, have this card. long story short, i did not.

in fact, wilson was not on my dodger team set list of players. branch rickey was, even though it is questionable as to whether or not his card features a photo of him from his dodger tenure. wilson, of course, is best known as a cub, but that is clearly a brooklyn dodgers uniform he is wearing in the photo used on his baseball wit card. there is a note on the back (not shown) that notes the photo as courtesy of the cubs which is strange.

i took my dodger team checklist from "team sets 4 u" back when it was easier to find checklists on that site. i thought about letting them know about their error, but the last time i made a checklist suggestion to them they pushed back so i don't have much desire to assist. i think there was another blogger who pointed out an issue with a checklist  to them and was rewarded with cards. go figure. that was definitely not my experience. 

anyway, this team set went from completed without wilson to completed with wilson, but then i noticed that my manny mota card from the set is the unnumbered version, so i still "need" a numbered mota. it's ok - i will take that over not being aware of a hack wilson dodger card to collect.
