something in the air

generosity has been prevalent in the blogosphere for a long time, and recently there were some giveaways and surprise envelopes from multiple sources. i figured it was time to highlight some of these instances that have furthered my collection.

first, the diamond king had a giveaway featuring shohei ohtani cards. i requested a 2018 panini diamond kings card

and true to form, kevin included a couple of extras. this is a 2017 panini black friday cody bellinger card

comc calls it rainbow spokes, tcdb calls it wedges. whatever it is, it's great!  and this is a 2022 topps chrome platinum anniversary max muncy card

platinum cream toile & rose gold refractor, and it's numbered on the back to 75.

kevin wasn't done there, as a while later, he offered up some paul skenes cards. i requested a 2024 bowman insert chrome prospect card

and once again, kevin included some bonus dodgers.

that's a 2020 panini chronicles phoenix ruby wave cody bellinger card numbered to 199, and this is a 2018 topps fire duke snider orange parallel card

numbered to 299.

next up, rod from padrographs had posted that there were some mailings sent out from padrographs hq, and that one of them was a poster in a tube mailer. well, guess who got the poster?!

rod sent me the steve garvey "out of the blue" poster that looks like this:

mine isn't signed, but it was easier to find a photo online than to try to roll it out and take one myself. i have a couple other garvey posters that i need to get set up somewhere.

along with a 1982 fleer roger erickson signed card

there were also some unopened packs, including 2002 upper deck world series heroes. nice to see don drysdale on the wrapper!

i don't really believe in unopened product, so here we go. my pack included a duke snider card

plus some other folks who played in the world series at some point

other packs included two 1992 upper deck minors which yielded some fun content, including chad ogea in tailored shorts

these days a few players are wearing these "above the knees" pants for real. here's the immortal skeets thomas

with one of the better broken bat cards out there.

there was one dodger card in the packs - greg hansell

i already had this card in my collection, but i found someone who needed one for theirs...

that would be tom, from angels in order. the hansell came in handy because i was preparing a return envelope for tom thanks to him sending me some cards a couple of weeks earlier. he sent these three cards from 1992 classic update white travel edition

along with a 1993-94 fleer excel roger cedeno minor league card

and a 1995 upper deck minor league top prospects karim garcia future stock card

i don't typically seek out minor league cards so it's great to have someone sending them my way!

not to be outdone, tom later had a giveaway in which i was able to procure this card:

2013 bowman platinum yasiel puig prospects chrome green refractor /399. it's really shiny and a great lead-in to st. patrick's day.

it was the only option

it’s weird to be in the postseason and not see clayton kershaw on the mound. bone spurs on his toe derailed his season after he returned from shoulder surgery and he was ruled out of the playoffs prior to the nlds. 

he is still with the club and i was happy to hear that he announced he would exercise his player option for 2025 during an interview prior to the start of the nlcs. that means his assault on the 3000 strikeout milestone will continue next year. he’s only 32 away from becoming the second pitcher to ever reach that mark as a dodger and the only one to do so solely as a dodger. in fact, he would be only the third member of the 3,000 k club to have recorded all of his strikeouts with one team, and the first since the club consisted of only two members (walter johnson and bob gibson). the dodgers would also become just the fifth franchise whose all-time strikeout leader had more than 3,000 punchouts, joining johnson's senators, gibson's cardinals, and the phillies (steve carlton), and braves (john smoltz).

the dodgers have unfinished business yet this season, but i will be happy to see 2025 roll around with kershaw on the mound again!

here's another group of cards sent my way by madding/cards on cards, who is one of the handful of regular trade partners i have at the moment.

my favorite card from this installment is this 2021 panini donruss don sutton card

not only is it old man sutton with the glorious perm showing lots of gray, it's a season stat line parallel numbered to 91 as in his whip from 1972 (which was 0.91 but that is less than 1 so wouldn't work for card numbering). as a bonus, it's a jersey number match as it is number 20 in the print run! a perfect card for the number 1 don sutton collector on tcdb!

there was one other dodger pitcher included in the envelope, and it was yoshinobu yamamoto on his 2024 bowman card

kerry also included future dodger pitcher shohei ohtani's 2024 bowman card, and i showed that card off in a post about his 50/50 achievement.

not too long before these cards arrived, i had been perusing the 2024 panini donruss checklist and determined that the only card i was really interested in was jackie robinson's. well, kerry delivered for me without even knowing!

2024 marks 75 years from jackie's first all-star game appearance for what it's worth.

kerry also sent some 2024 topps chrome cards - a mookie betts base

and a freddie freeman refractor

and if he pulled any ohtanis i hope he kept them to trade in at the local card shop.

it is a vertex card, and these days i am not sure whether or not that is a base card subset or an insert. at least with topps fusion back in the day i knew what was what. panini has me so confused.

there's a whole new meaning now

50/50 has always meant "a 1 in 2 chance" or "could go either way" or "even split". there is a new meaning to 50/50 now, thanks to shohei ohtani who surpassed the half century mark in both home runs and stolen bases last thursday.  he joins jose canseco as a trailblazer - canseco recorded the first 40/40 season in 1988, a feat commemorated by topps in 2023 with this card

now, ohtani has created his own club for players with 50 homers and 50 steals. here's his 2024 bowman card (thanks kerry!)

i was able to watch most of the game, in fact i opened the mlb.tv app just after ohtani hit home run number 49. to see him add numbers 50 and 51 was pretty great. his 6 for 6 performance was easily one of the greatest individual offensive games in the history of baseball, and better than the one i saw in person - shawn green's 4 homer game - thanks to the rbi total and the two steals he recorded.

ohtani also passed green to become the dodgers' all-time single season home run leader. he is obviously the dodgers' first 50/50 player, and also their first 40/40 player. as you saw in last night's post, matt kemp narrowly missed hitting that mark in 2011. so, what the heck, here's a 2023 panini chronicles certified blue parallel of green

just to clear out a couple more cards from my scanned folder.

what an amazing season each of these guys had, but ohtani's is something new entirely!

christmas in august

like many of you, i was both surprised and excited to see an email from david at tribecards a few weeks ago. he let me know that my cards from his christmas 2020 giveaway were shipping! about a week later, i had a 660 count box in my mailbox!

now, i had forgotten about this giveaway, and so i went back to see what it was all about. after all, this was not the first time that david hosted a huge card giveaway. for this one, he had asked us to choose our top 3 teams and top 3 players. i didn't see any cards featuring the players that i most likely identified, but i recognized the three teams for sure.

the dodgers were team number one for me, of course, and while there weren't a lot of boys in blue, the best thing in the box related to them was this 1997 donruss vxp 1.0 mike piazza thing

which is a rectangular cd-rom. i did not know that donruss was in the cd-rom game, but they were. here are the instructions

i did not try the item out before putting it in my 1997 dodgers binder, so i don't know if it is windows 10 compatible or not. what a great oddball for my collection!

the other two teams i identified are represented by the oldest and newest cards in the box

a 1977 topps dan ford twins card and a 2024 topps heritage george springer blue jays card. the oldest blue jays card was this 1978 topps jesse jefferson

and holy smokes i love getting 1978 topps cards in the mail!

there were a couple of outliers in my box, including a 1980 topps rusty staub card

i certainly didn't mind seeing le grand orange, and this card and the other 1980 topps cards gave me some serious flashbacks to neighborhood pack ripping.

here are some of the other cards that caught my eye. 

from the dodger stack, this 1988 score mini great moments in baseball insert was new to me

it's all about the end of don drysdale's scoreless innings streak

i always knew drysdale's streak as 58 and two-thirds innings, but at some point, elias changed it to just 58 innings which is the number on the back of the card. i recall drysdale not being in favor of losing two outs from the streak (although that last out was a sac fly). it was all made moot when orel hershiser went 59 innings without allowing a run at the end of the 1988 season.

that made me do a double take. it's not blackless as it has the border around the photo and the facsimile signature, but the color is definitely not all there.

another printer anomaly was this 1991 topps mike scioscia

which had some printing plates off register - but not as badly as some that jon shared recently!

another 1991 card david included was this jose gonzalez card

which really features a photo of billy bean. bean passed away recently, and will be remembered as a bit of a trailblazer in the sport.

not a dodger card, but here's the guy who was drafted immediately after alex rodriguez

little d had flashes of dominance, but it just didn't work out in the end.

most of the cards i received (like last time) were twins cards. i've no issue with that, as these cards included some gems like this 1995 topps embossed golden idols kirby puckett card

i had probably not thought of or looked at darrell jackson's 1981 fleer card

for over 40 years, but there it was in the box i received and i immediately thought back to me and my friends wondering why an american league pitcher was holding a bat.

the cards also reminded me that shane mack must have had a clause that his cards needed to show him sliding into third base

i don't think i had ever seen randy bush's 1989 fleer card before (i stopped set collecting fleer after 1987)

but his teammates were nicer to him than bill ripken's teammates were to ol' duckface. for what it's worth, i don't think that bush is holding his bat in the photo.

there were some recent twins cards, including these 2024 bowman inserts (paper and chrome)

of brooks lee. lee is from near where i grew up so he has potential to become my favorite non-dodger.

one more twins card - a 2021 topps allen & ginter ryan jeffers auto card

it's more like an initialed card, but it's still pretty sweet.

as for the blue jays, here's a roger clemens base card

from that donruss vxp 1.0 release.

i have a weird affinity for buybacks, and i received these two from 2017

the 1999 topps jose cruz jr is a silver foil version, while the 1988 topps jose nunez is bronze. i remember being shocked when the mariners traded cruz to the blue jays during his rookie campaign as he was a highly touted prospect.

speaking of prospects, here's a 2023 bowman sterling prospect autograph of manuel beltre

i think this one actually is just initialed, but with a star added for effect. beltre is currently 20 years old and with the blue jays single-a affiliate in dunedin.

my favorite blue jays card in the box was this black & white parallel

of vladimir guerrero jr's 2019 topps archives snapshots card.

by choosing the dodgers, twin, and blue jays, i was able to handle a lot of cards that i hadn't taken the time to look at for a long time. i was also able to do a comparison of ken landreaux cards from near-opposite ends of the 1980's

fun fact - for a brief time in 1987, the dodgers had half of the players that the angels sent to the twins for rod carew in landreaux and brad havens. i will always remember landreaux for the 1981 season and the fact that he caught the last out of the 1981 world series.
