subjective value at the card show

winter finally hit my part of the country last weekend, temperature wise anyway, but that didn't stop me from heading out to the monthly card show. it was my first show in a few months, although i did walk through a mall show before christmas (buying nothing).

one motivating factor for me was a potential meet-up with brian from highly subjective completely arbitrary. sure enough, i was able to find him and say hello. we exchanged some cards, as is customary, and the first one i saw was this 2023 topps holiday mookie betts ornament
the tree is down in my house, otherwise i would have taken a photo of this among our other ornaments, none of which were baseball card related. this goes in the dodger binder, not amongst the christmas decorations and so will never know its true purpose.

one photo i did take was of our wallet cards at the show
we set them down in front of one dealer's mojo hit case. actually, this case wasn't as mojo hit as some others at the show. my wallet card is, and has always been, a 1974 topps steve garvey card. brian just recently swapped his out with a new card for 2024. it's a 1992 fleer citgo/7-11/the performers card of the greatest of all-time, rickey henderson. henderson is slated to be an autograph guest at the big annual show here in the twin cities in april. brian and i talked a bit about that show, but i didn't see rickey's name attached until later in the weekend (vlad will be there, too!).

one of the cards in the package from brian was one of the dodgers in that same performers set - ramon martinez
i don't know the last time i've found tommy john cards in a trade package, but brian included several
john is appearing in a few recent topps releases and i am happy to see it.

here's a 1998 fleer flair hideo nomo card
that caught my eye. it's a "showcase row 2". thanks, fleer, for making parallels super confusing.

brian didn't ignore my mini-collections, giving me this 1997 score roberto alomar double play card
that could also fit in my tatooine collection. he included a couple of cards for that collection as well - 1996 pinnacle jason kendall
and 1997 topps stadium club carlos delgado
fun stuff.

i will show off some of my purchases from the card show in a future post, but until then, there were more dodger needs received from brian, such as this 2023 topps update miguel vargas stars of mlb insert
and the chrome version of michael busch's stars of mlb card
as well.

earlier in the week the dodgers traded busch to the cubs. i had already put one of his cards into the team bag of cards i had for brian, since busch hails from an outer-ring suburb of saint paul and i figured he would fit in to brian's collection of twin cities natives. he may not be collecting busch cards yet since he included not only that chrome card but also his 2023 topps holiday metallic paralle
it was a great way to end the holiday season - a card show with a blogger meet-up and some holiday cards to boot. thanks brian!

  1. Brian picked a cool wallet card. I like that photo of Rickey. And that Flair Showcase card of Nomo is awesome!

  2. The Flair "Rows" have always been confusing to me, and this point, I'm sure they'll continue to be for many years to come. And I have to way too much to collect right now, but someday I really should look into getting a box of Action Packed. I really miss those sets.
