back in 1971, allen was a pre-season acquisition for the dodgers as was mookie betts this year, and so it would seem that card number 650 and betts are made for each other. we will have to wait and see if there is a similar pose, but i doubt dodger stadium would be the backdrop unless the photographer had the wherewithal to get the shot at the introductory press conference held for betts and david price earlier this year.
anyway, here's a comparison between the sets that i hadn't seen made before - cards number 82 from 1971 topps and 2020 topps heritage
the cox card was always a stand-out for me, and the scherzer is a decent companion. i still think that a third incarnation of the washington senators made more sense than calling the team the nationals, but it has worked out ok for the franchise.
some other high number cards i'll be curious to see are 511 (chris short - who will be the baserunner in the background?), 515 (tommy john - would be perfect for dallas keuchel), 554 (lowell palmer - with pat neshek unsigned, will someone else pick up the mantle?), and 630 (roberto clemente - who will topps choose to replicate that iconic card?). i guess we will see in a couple of days few months...
In case you didn't know, the release date for 2020 Topps Heritage High Number has been pushed way back to 12/30/2020. I haven't yet found and explanation why. I was so looking forward to this product, too.
ReplyDeletethat's quite the delay. in the meantime, staring at the cox and scherzer cards is not too shabby of a consolation prize. nice job topps!
DeleteI did not know about the delay - thanks! I wrote this post a week or two ago when the release date was still this week.
DeleteWow, that's a long delay.
