i'm ok with this but not that

i am not sure how i became aware of this 1998 upper deck ken griffey jr. most memorable home runs card
i thought it was the junior junkie who showed it off earlier this year, but i couldn't find the post to link to. it might have been someone else, or i might have stumbled upon it on comc.com.  at any rate, i wound up ordering it on sportlots to add it to my dodger stadium collection, although i could also put it in my lurker collection as i spy what i believe to be mike piazza's forearm there in the photo.

i was surprised when it showed up and was slightly oversized. i was also surprised (then again, maybe not) to learn that the memorable home run feted by the card was junior's 56th dong of the 1997 season, which he hit against the a's.  especially since there is no athletic to be found on the card.  the back of card shows a yankee catcher's arm, and the front a dodger's, so the card was more about the aesthetic of the kid's swing and not the actual home run itself.  like the title says, i'm ok with this since it gives me the chance to add a griffey card to one of my mini-collections.

however, the title also says that i am not ok with something. that "something" would be griffey's 2020 topps 'topps choice' card.  i was pretty excited to see it at first - it uses the 2011 topps design
which is exciting because griffey's career ended in 2010 and he was absent from topps product the following year. in fact, the only 2011 card of junior that i could find for my final tribute mini collection was a tristar obak offering. i was all set to purchase this card and add it to my mini collection just as i had done with some recent topps archives releases of jim hunter and al kaline that used the 1980 and 1975 topps designs respectively, but then i saw the back of the card
gah. why are there no stats on the back?! what is the purpose of this card? i was left hoping that there were "original back" versions out there like with those "cards your mother threw out" (or, as cardboard junkie calls them - "yo momma" cards), but no dice. so close, topps. so close.

  1. Lol. I'm challenging Topps to go one year without creating an insert set like this. At least this Griffey card didn't exist. But it seems like Topps looks forward to creating at least one insert set each year that honors cards our mom threw out or iconic rookie cards.
