lumbering along

there are 148 steve garvey cards included in the 2024 leaf lumber release. most of those are parallels to the "base" bronze version, and are made of purple, platinum, pewter, navy blue, red, emerald, silver, and gold varieties. there are some cards that just have one version but that's because they are 1/1 cards.

within those 148 varieties there are 19 different cards within 16 different subsets. garvey gets multiple cards in the mount crushmore (3) and the lumber club (2) subsets. my days of chasing multiple versions of these cards are over, and i am not even that interested in getting one example from each subset either. i will continue to monitor cards as they are posted and may pull the trigger if the mood strikes.

so far, i've picked up three of the 148 cards out there, including the 1/1  steve garvey and ron cey card from the dynamic duo subset
i was fortunate to see this card just after it was listed with a low buy it now. a card featuring garvey and cey that celebrates not just their long tenure as dodger infielders but more specifically the 1977 season that kickstarted my baseball fandom? i had to have it! now if leaf would do a mount crushmore featuring these two players plus dusty baker and reggie smith i would be beside myself.

the other two cards i've added are garvey centric - hitters ink (platinum /6)
and signature sticks (bronze /35)
they are both sticker autos with bat chips but the prices were right for me. there are one or two other auto cards i wouldn't mind adding, but i am not too interested in the cards that are bat only at this point. i saw a bat knob card that was from a black bat, and i don't recall garvey ever using a black bat. he may have, i just don't recall. i think i will rest with leaf bat cards after picking up some bat cards that were verifiably garvey's a couple of years ago.

on a related note, i saw a couple of orel hershiser patch cards from leaf on ebay recently. the photo of the jersey back (similar to the one leaf used for cey above) was clearly of a dodger jersey, but the patch came from a rangers jersey (the patch was the johnny oates memorial patch) that hershiser would have worn as the team's pitching coach. just a weird oddity i noticed from leaf.

  1. A. I don't blame you or any player collector for having a limit to what they'll chase.

    B. I really like that Dynamic Duo card. It's just a shame that they used a photo of Cey's jersey instead of Cey himself. But everything else about that card is really cool. I don't even mind the lack of logos.

    C. It's sad that card manufacturers don't provide a detailed explanation of where their jersey swatches/patches come from. The thing about that Hershiser patching being from a Rangers jersey as a pitching coach is almost laughable.

  2. Obviously Leaf doesn't have an agreement with Ron Cey, hence his being represented by a jersey on that card.
