red scheondienst is in my hall of famer collection

originally, red schoendienst was not on my hall of famer collection player list, but he's there now.  here's the card that serves as his entry:

that's a 2012 panini cooperstown signatures card, numbered 038/549.  here's the back:

the reason for my reversal is two-fold.  first, schoendienst's 1972 topps card from his first managerial run with the cardinals somehow found its way in to my collection at a very early stage. in fact, i somehow obtained a number of 1971 and 1972 cards in late 1978. unfortunately, i don't recall the circumstances, but do remember that schoendienst's card was among them.  certainly i would have preferred that the card be of walt alston, but i didn't have that choice.

when schoendienst was voted in to the hall of fame by the veteran's committee in 1989, i was somewhat suprised to learn he was going in as a player. i honestly hadn't given his playing career any thought as i knew him only as a manager.  speaking of which, he returned to manage the cardinals for a third time the year after he was inducted in to the hall. that interim stint was just part of his multi-decade role within the cardinals organization.

the other reason that schoendienst was added to my hall of famer collection is that jon from penny sleeves for your thoughts offered up the above card for my collection. that was most appreciated and made him worthy of inclusion in and of itself.  thanks jon!
