i built my own custom 2020 topps stadium club blaster

i previously shared my blaster of 2020 topps stadium club which was replete with great looking cards. however, there were still a number of cards from the set that i wanted to add to my collection, so i decided to build my own blaster via sportlots and ebay. mission accomplished, and here are 40 more cards that i've added to my collection.

clayton kershaw
what a great shot of kershaw on the mound in dodger stadium, and of the three sisters palm trees in the background. the golden road brewing advertising is paying off, too.

luis arraez
from my favorite stadium to my second favorite - this is a great shot of arraez in the twins' dugout at target field. topps has previously made these types of images photo variations for joe mauer and brian dozier, but i am glad they gave it to arraez on a base card. this one goes in my "name/number on the back" mini-collection.

dustin may
i am assuming may is pitching indoors, otherwise i am not sure how these overhead shots are achieved.

mike yastrzemski
i selected this card thanks to grandpa yaz being in the photo. in to my "lurker" mini-collection it goes!

joc pederson
this card of joc is as close as i've been to an utz card this year.

paul dejong
one for the double play binder!

justin verlander
similar to the may card up above, but this one is all dirt and bound for the "tatooine" mini-collection.

brusdar graterol
i found a red foil parallel of graterol in my purchased blaster, but still needed the base.

brusdar graterol autograph!
i ordered this card blind, and didn't stop to think that the on-card nature of the auto might mean he was still a twin at the time. still, a nice card to add to my rookie inventory.

robinson cano
speaking of red foil, here's a parallel for my double play collection

george brett
couldn't resist adding a new card of brett, even though it doesn't fit any of my collections.

yu darvish
yu is back in dodger stadium for my "dodger stadium" mini-collection.

mookie betts
i am thinking that we would have had a much better photo had the season started on time.

don mattingly
playing first base on tatooine. in to the mini-collection it goes.

justin turner
i enjoy seeing turner gaze at balls in flight to deep left field.

clayton kershaw
yes, a duplicate. this one goes in the "dodger stadium" mini-collection.

will smith
i expected a photo from smith's walk-off home run in the summer of 2019, but this is not bad.

trey mancini
i felt badly not buying any orioles cards. no, i actually ordered this card due to buster posey lurking there. at least i think it's posey.

jason varitek
catching on tatooine.

marcus semien
another for the double play binder.

max kepler
another great stadium club card of kepler in target field. this one is for the "name/number on back" mini-collection. in other news, i am not sure when i found out that the twins' logo stood for "twin cities". as a kid, i thought is was "twins club" or something like that.

ted williams
perhaps the greatest hitter who ever lived - on earth or on tatooine.  and with batting gloves?!

tim anderson
it's a play at second base that looks like a broken up double play. good enough for the double play mini-collection.

gavin lux
the old nlds player introduction shot.

ryne sandberg
this was another card that was in my purchased blaster. i am not sure why i ordered another copy.

paul dejong
another duplicate, but this one is for the "tatooine" mini-collection.

kolten wong
a standard batting shot for the "name/number on the back" mini-collection.

michael brantley
batting in the world series on tatooine.

corey seager
this is a nice shot with the fenway green monster scoreboard (and chris taylor) behind him.

ozzie smith
i added this card because of the dodger logo in the background. i'll add it to my lurker collection because it's my rules.

michael chavis
more double play action.

max muncy
i hope there is a pitcher covering first.

ryan zimmerman
making me mad in the 2019 nlds with a lurking rick honeycutt behind him.

mike clevinger
i am not happy that this guy is in the nl west now. i wanted this card because it features the frank robinson memorial patch on his right sleeve. the patch was only worn on opening day i think, so it's been hard to find on cardboard. nice photo selection, topps!

cavan biggio
turning two, i assume

cavan biggio
and, he's on tatooine!  two cards for two of my mini-collections.

cody bellinger
and now the dodger team set is complete.

michael brantley
another duplicate. this one goes in the memorial binder, thanks to the umpire wearing the "ec" patch for former umpire eric cooper.

gavin lux
a second helping of the rookie du jour for the "name/number on the back" mini-collection.

sandy koufax
i ordered a second copy of this card because i have a feeling it will show up in my favorite cards of the year mini-collection. it has already bumped the flagship kiké card, which i didn't think was possible.

i also decided to create a few cards that should have been, or at least could have been. the design of this year's stadium club is pretty clean and lends itself to customs.  take a look.

hank aaron's card in the set is fantastic, but how about this one?
sure that is a sneaky way for me to get bill russell and davey lopes on to a modern card, but i think it would make for a great card.

roy campanella hasn't been featured in too many recent sets, not like it was in the 2010's. a card featuring the iconic photo from roy campanella night would make a great card, i think
plus, pee wee! i went with this as a los angeles dodger card since the moment took place in la in 1959. i also just realized that there weren't any black and white photos in stadium club this year. topps must be comfortable with their colorizing skills. it would be interesting to see what color might do to that photo.

the rest of the cards i created are pretty gratuitous.

here's what a steve garvey card might have looked like:
sorry, lee smith. this is garvey's 1984 walk-off homer in the nlcs. there's ron cey at third base - bonus penguin!

speaking of whom, i used a photo from the 1981 world series locker room celebration to create a card of cey's very own:
of course, garvey is in the photo, too, along with pedro guerrero, bowie kuhn, and bob uecker. this photo was taken when it was mistakenly reported that garvey was a co-mvp of the series. turns out it was the wrong steve - it was yeager who had been selected. i was a little bit bummed when that was revealed, although the dodgers had just beaten the yankees, so who was i to complain.

here's a card that doesn't feature garvey, unfortunately.  i gave this card to bill russell
because he is most prominently featured, but cey, davey lopes, and joe ferguson are there, too. plus it's set in dodger stadium.

here's a card for lopes
that also conveniently features garvey.

mike piazza's card, had he been included in this year's set, could have looked like this:
this card would have been fantastic, not just because it features a lurking bill russell, but also because the photo comes from a game i attended at wrigley field back in april of 1998.

the last three cards i made are all steve garvey cards, but i think the photos work well with the stadium club tradition
ah, what could have should have been!

  1. Man, Stadium Club has some great shots. Your customs are pretty top notch too!

  2. Those overhead shots could've been taken by a drone.

  3. Nice job on the customs! Love the Garvey card with the Cey. As for early favorites in the 2020 SC... it's gotta be Kershaw and Ted Williams... with Koufax right behind them.

  4. With all the Tatooine cards, I'm surprised there wasn't a Tusken Raider cameo! Great customs...if you said they were Stadium Club short prints I would have believed you!

  5. I've always wanted that shot of Campy to show up on a baseball card. It might possibly be my all-time favorite baseball photograph.

I went with a similar build-a-blaster strategy with 2020 Stadium Club as well - got almost all the base cards I really wanted for, yes, almost exactly the cost of a blaster. Definitely the easier (and cheaper) route.
