that's a 1998 donruss signatures significant signature card. it's numbered 1640/2000 on the back:
the back also features a latter day photo of yogi, which is the version of yogi that i am more familiar with.
by the time I began following baseball, yogi was a coach for the yankees and i quickly became more familiar with his quotes and unique phrasing than i did about his playing career. that ignorance didn't last too long, as i learned about yogi the player in tandem with my research in to roy campanella's career. they were the two premier catchers of the 1950's, with both winning 3 mvp's during that decade. berra, of course, outpaced campanella in world series championships. he won 10 rings during his career as a player, and then 3 more as a coach (including twice against the dodgers).
as a result of his good fortune to be a part of the dominant yankee teams of the 1940's and 1950's, berra owns many world series records, including games played, plate appearances, and hits, and he ranks high on the leaderboard in many other categories. when berra retired, he had hit more home runs than any other catcher to have played the game, but it still took two tries for him to be voted in to the hall of fame. crazy.
despite his excellence as a player, the first card i ever owned of berra was a 1981 donruss card and so i identify with the elder version of one of baseball's greatest characters.

This is an incredible collection! I had a chance to pick up a Berra auto during a COMC Black Friday sale but I passed because the auto wasn't super clear. I kind of wish i had.
ReplyDeleteIt took me a while to find one for my collection. But im glad I did!
DeleteVery nice collection.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tom.
DeleteA Yogi auto? This series just keeps getting better and better!
ReplyDeleteIt gets better. Just wait.
Delete99% sure my first card of Berra was his 81D card too. And my very first Berra autograph was the one you featured in this post.
ReplyDeleteGreat collectors collect alike! Or differently. Thats ok, too.
DeleteA Yogi autograph isn't something that I need to own, but if I ever get the chance, and the price is right, I'd like to get his 2013 Golden Age auto.
