the swedish thing

the first dodger game of the season should be over by the time this post publishes, but today's post has nothing to do with opening day. rather, it is a quick look at a recent addition to my collection. i previously showed my 1977-79 sportscaster steve garvey card in this post almost exactly ten years ago, and now i have another one to show:
except this one is different on the back:
swedish version! that is a lot of consonants and umlauts.

i had no idea there were swedish versions of these cards, but i suppose, being manufactured in italy, that there are a number of different language variations out there. anyone know of others?

for the record, google translate tells me that the subheader "bollpojke som värdefullaste spelaren" translates from swedish to english as "ball boy as the most valuable player" vs. "batboy to mvp" on the english version. still gets the point across, i think.

trevlig öppningsdag, everybody!

  1. That is a very unique Garvey issue! I have a couple Swedish-language hockey cards but never imagined there would be a Swedish-language baseball card.

  2. I remember reading on another blog that there are Italian and Japanese versions of Sportscasters as well, so you can chase a rainbow of foreign languages if you're interested.

    1. those two languages definitely make sense for this issue.

  3. I recall there being quite a few different languages, maybe a dozen or more. The question would be, did all of the cards get made in those languages. Sportscasters were issued via subscription and eventually the demand dropped to the point of the issue being scrapped. I'd guess that demand in other countries may have been less to start with, so making it into the end for many of those countries was unlikely.
