the k is for kershaw kountdown continues - setting down snakes edition

yes, the kountdown to 3,000 strikeouts for clayton kershaw continues as he took the mound against the diamondbacks on tuesday night in la. he struck out 5 batters to give him 120 strikeouts on the season. those 5 diamondbacks that he k'd increased his career total to 2,927.

in honor of his performance, here are 5 cards from my collection to represent strikeouts 2,923 through 2,927.

2,923 - 2023 topps 1988 35th anniversary all-star

2,924 - 2015 bowman purple parallel

2,925 - 2016 bowman purple parallel

2,926 - 2016 bowman platinum purple parallel

2,927 - 2018 topps triple threads amethyst parallel

kershaw remains in 21st place on the all-time leader board, and he will remain there until he passes zack greinke. greinke, who struck out 2 pirates in his start on monday, has a career strikeout total of 2,962. kershaw is now 35 k's behind greinke and 73 away from the 3,000 milestone.

kershaw made it through five innings against the diamondbacks, allowing just one run - another solo home run. he got the win, which was career victory 209 and so he is tied with don drysdale in that regard. he needs 25 more wins to pass don sutton and become the winningest dodger pitcher in franchise history. to reach that milestone, he would likely need to pitch in to the 2025 season based on his current trajectory.

it looks like kershaw's next start will come on sunday against the braves which will be a good test for him now that he's a few starts in to his post injury tenure. regardless of when he makes his next start or how many k's he posts, i will be back to update the kountdown soon thereafter. stay tuned!
