albert pujols is in my hall of famer collection

after a few posts featuring players not yet enshrined in cooperstown, i've got some in the queue that celebrate active players who are well on their way to the hall of fame. these players are already included in my hall of famer collection, starting with albert pujols, whose represented by this card:

that is a 2003 topps autograph card. here's the back:

kind of a clunky design, but i am glad i picked this one up when i did (sometime in 2019).

pujols is wrapping up his 21st big league season this year, and it may very well be his last. he burst on to the scene in 2001 as a 21-year old (although some believe he was/is older than his reported age) and hit 37 home runs with an ops of 1.013 to be unanimously declared the rookie of the year. two years later, he won the national league batting title, and two years after that, he won his first of three mvp awards (to go along with seven other top 5 finishes in the voting). he also helped the cardinals to three pennants and two world series titles, with the last one coming in 2011 - his last season with the cardinals.

pujols, of course, moved on to the angels and had a couple of pretty good seasons. they just weren't up to the standard he had set for himself, unfortunately. in recent years, pujols has been performing at and around replacement value as he continued his assault on the offensive statistic leaderboard.  pujols currently ranks 12th all-time in hits, 5th in home runs, 5th in doubles, 3rd in rbi, 4th in extra base hits, and 4th in total bases.

earlier this season, he was released by the angels and signed by the dodgers. since then, i have tried to watch as many of his at bats as possible. i didn't get to see him play in person until my trip to coors field in july of this year, and while he had a couple of hits in those games, my most vivid memories of him was the ovation he received during pre-game warmups from the dodger faithful, and the way he jumped to the railing of the dugout when relief pitcher phil bickford got his first big league hit. pujols was all smiles for his teammate, and really looked like he was having fun. i hope he earns his third world series championship this year to top off what has been an incredible career.
