randy johnson is in my hall of famer collection

he wasn't the first major leaguer named randy johnson that i was aware of, but he was certainly the best. the big unit is in my hall of famer collection with this card as his entry:

that's a 2019 topps high tek autograph card. here's the back:

there was a twins player named randy johnson who showed up in the 1982 topps traded set, and there were two randy johnsons (the twins player and another guy who played for the braves) in the 1983 topps set. when 1989 rolled around there was only one randy johnson on a baseball card and he was a tall lefty who pitched for the expos. his trade to the mariners during the 1989 season landed on my radar because i had been following the m's who were sporting some exciting young players like edgar martinez, jay buhner, omar vizquel, and of course, ken griffey jr. it didn't hurt that their manager at the time was jim lefebvre.

the mariners replaced vizquel with alex rodriguez after a few seasons, and, in 1995, the remainder of that core set of players propelled the mariners to their first postseason appearance. in what turned out to be a fantastic series, the mariners beat the yankees to advance to the alcs. before that, however, they had to beat the angels in a one-game playoff at the end of the regular season, and johnson took the mound for the mariners, facing former mariner (and the pitcher the expos had traded johnson for) mark langston. the mariners won behind a complete game, 12 strikeout performance from johnson, and baseball was saved in seattle.

as for baseball accolades, johnson won five cy young awards, including four in a row. he won the pitching triple crown in 2004, has 303 career wins, and sits second all-time in strikeouts with 4,875. there are so many highlights and stories about his intimidating style and dominance that i won't bother to mention them here. instead, i will note that i am embarrassed that i never saw him pitch in person - i came close a couple of times when he was with the mariners, and missed his only start in minnesota that took place while i was living here. so, instead of a personal memory of seeing him pitch, what comes to my mind when i think of randy johnson is his perfect game.

i was on a business trip in dallas in mid-may, 2004, and i saw that randy johnson had thrown a perfect game against the braves that night. the next day, some co-workers and i got tickets to the rangers game, hoping to see some similar magic at the ballpark. it didn't happen, but i'll save that experience for another post.
