will update bring the 1978 redux?

after featuring an insert set based on the 1952 topps design in series 1,
topps has pivoted to the 1965 design for their "redux" insert set in series 2
i added both of those alec bohm cards due to the fact that he is surrounded by dirt - playing third base on tatooine, as it were. i bought a lot of four of the 1965 redux cards recently. in addition to the bohm, i selected clayton kershaw's card
plus a couple of others for my memorials collection that i will show in a different post.

anyway, by my math, topps is on target to feature 1978 in update this year, as 1952 +13 = 1965; 1965 + 13 = 1978. am i crazy to think that topps would go in consistent 13 year increments between sets? probably, but they have shown some signs of life in recent years when it comes to the 1978 design. there was the online set a couple of years ago, plus a couple of throwback thursday sets that used the record breaker and manager card designs, so it could happen.  and, with archives featuring just about every set but 1978, maybe it is even somewhat likely?

of course, topps had to produce a couple of 1978 cards this year as they celebrated their 70th anniversary with the 70 years of topps insert set. series 1 had shohei ohtani on a 1978 card, and series 2 features cal ripken jr.
the ohtani card featured a photo that was taken from a weird angle for baseball cards, and it was cropped oddly in my opinion. this ripken, however, is great. while there weren't a lot of action photos in the 1978 set, the orioles had a few and i could see this one fitting right in alongside ken singleton and tony muser, and i've happily added it to my 1978 topps "master set" build.

whether or not there is a full blown 1978 redux insert set in update, i am looking forward to seeing who gets to grace the 70 years of topps installment in that release for this simple but fantastic design.

  1. The 1978 Topps design is underrated in my book. It's really grown on me over the past few years. As for these inserts... Topps is going overboard with reusing old card designs. Between Heritage, Archives, and all of the different insert sets the past few years... it's pretty obvious that they're struggling with card design ideas.
