my retired number collection - more unnumbered

not sure how i missed it, but the twins added another item to their retired number display at target field earlier this year. on august 11, 2024, they installed a "w" alongside their retired numbers to recognize their washington senators heritage.

a few years ago, they started flying pennants at target field noting the senators' pennants and 1920 world series championship, and this is the next logical step. however, the twins did not identify any specific players to go along with the recognition - not that i could find, anyway.

still, i wanted to recognize the gesture within my retired number collection, so i've added this 2001 fleer greats of the game walter johnson card to my mini-collection
johnson is the most obvious choice to be recognized among senator players, as he was a member of the hall of fame's first class and the first to reach the 3,000 strikeout milestone. the card i chose also shows the "w" that the senators wore on their sleeves which ties it to the display at target field.

i like the fact that the twins are embracing their franchise history and keeping the senators alive in this way. and, with the dodgers adding a "b" for former owner walter o'malley to their retired number ring of honor, i wonder if they will take the next step and add one for zack wheat.

because the twins did not mention a specific player, i did not update my counting stats of retired hall of famers. i expect those totals to be updated next year with a couple of number retirements, however, we will have to wait and see.

  1. As a fan of a team that's switching cities... it's nice to see a current team embrace their history and honor their past.
