45 years a classic

i am so happy to have this card in my collection. it's the 2005 upper deck all-star classics insert covering the 1979 all-star game
this game, played 45 years ago (!) tonight,  was such a seminal moment in my fandom. i'm not even mad that pete rose couldn't have his name on the card and instead is just "phillies no. 14". here's the back with the linescore
mike schmidt is featured, and he was the only national leaguer to have two hits in the game (a double and a triple) but to me the game was all about dave parker who gets namechecked on the back and was also the game's mvp thanks to his two outfield assists.

lee mazzilli also gets mentioned, and he could easily have been the mvp thanks to his game-tying home run in the 8th inning before he drew the game-winning walk in the 9th. and, had the american league held on to win, it could have been the host team's own rep - bruce bochte - getting the honors as it was his pinch-hit single in the 6th that gave the al it's 6-5 lead.

hopefully i will be able to find the card that features the 1977 game which features the players that i saw with the all-star shields in the 1978 topps set, but this was the one i wanted most. what a game!

  1. Cool card. I still remember exactly where I was when I was watching that game and and little things like what I was drinking.

  2. Great Card - never seen this before might go looking for it - though Parker won the game MVP

  3. I love any blog post that references the 1979 Midsummer Classic, because it gives me a reason to watch both of those throws by Parker.

  4. Why wasn't Rose listed by name?
