i am well aware that tomorrow is steve garvey's 72nd birthday, but i will admit that i was not aware that dave kingman was celebrating the same milestone today. earlier this year, i was going through a bunch of oversized cards and noticed that the two 1978 pepsi cards i owned featured those two stars from the 70's with their birth dates prominently displayed.
in my study of card backs way back in the summer of 1978, i discovered that dodger teammates reggie smith and don sutton were born on the exact same day (april 2, 1945) about 500 miles apart (in shreveport, la and clio, al, respectively). kingman and garvey, however, were born about as far apart geographically as you can be in the lower 48.
happy birthday to both of these guys!
I saw that it was Garvey's birthday tomorrow... while writing my Steve Carlton post. That's pretty cool that Reggie Smith and Don Sutton were born on the same day... and that Kong and Garvey were born a day apart. Not sure why... but I would have thought that Garvey was a few years younger than Kingman.
